You are right. Currently SMU has 251 Rivals points. Colorado is 50th with 594 points. SMU has 13 3-stars.
If SMU added 7 3-stars (top 20 in class count towards ranking) then we would have 345 points. I do not know if that would be 51st or 60th, but it is obviously way behind 50th.
The only UH recruit I see that provides bonus points is Marrick Charles. He is the 45th ranked DT, and the top 50 DT provide bonus. If SMU got 7 3-stars and one of them was Marrick Charles, then SMU would have 485 points.
Of course, that assumes that Robert Lewis is an SMU committ as he provides bonus as well.
You are also right that the class rankings are pretty silly. I track SMU rivals rankings because it is something people talk about a lot and it is short hand for how good a recruiting class is, but a formula that awards more points for every other player in the class just because you sign one top player is somewhat ridiculous.
