Wilrey Fontenot?

Postby MustangKurt20 » Mon Jan 13, 2003 1:01 pm

I read a post that he visited this weekend and is an Arizona commit. Never heard of him. But if Zona thought enough of him to offer him a scholarship then I think he's qaulified enough to suit up for the Ponies! Does anyone know if he's on the Rivals database b/c I couldn't find him anywhere. Thanks

Kurt

Looking at the Zona board they think very highly of him. He would be a major steal.

I heard that even though he's small, he was among the most impressive recruits in town this weekend. When they showed highlights on the JumboTron, the recruits'jaws dropped when they watched this guy make plays. He's a stud, and we need secondary help.

He also is an excellent return man. Something like over 40 yards per KO in hs.

An AVERAGE of 40+ yards? That's ridiculous. Doesn't matter who his team is playing against, that average is unbelievable. With Jonas graduating in a year, this guy sounds like he could be more than capable of taking over when Rutledge moves on to the NFL.

From an Arizona board:

Wilrey Fontenot
CB, 5-11, 170
Humble HS, Humble, TX

Speedy corner from the same high school as former Wildcat running back Leo Mills. An excellent kick returner, Fontenot will come in and compete right away for kickoff and punt return duties. A shut-down corner who loves playing against the pass.

Only problem is that he's 3 inches shorter than advertised.

But he's also a playmaker who absolutely flies.

I'll take a guy with that speed and who makes plays like he does. And Coach Bennett has had good success in the past with guys who are short, as long as they can really motor.

He sounds like another Jonas Rutledge type... One of those guys that, beyond height, speed, strength and all those other stats, is a playmaker.

Some guys just have a nose for the game, and he could be one of those guys.

The reports I've seen have me completely sold on this kid. What are our chances of helping him see the light and jump ship on Arizona (before another Mackovic-induced mutiny) to sign with the Ponies?!?

"For now, I'm still committed to Arizona, but I don't know if that's going to be true here in a few weeks," Fontenot said."

That's what he said, and it looks like Syndric Steptoe could follow suit. They both loved SMU. And I love Coach Bennett. Go Mustangs!

I think those are done deals. If things keep shaking up at LSU..we could be hearing from Ingram again....and I think we're still in for Jason Berryman. I really want Khari Martin and Joel Armstrong. Bring on the 3-stars baby! Go Stangs!

Do we have enough scholarships for all those guys you want? I think we'll have to pick and choose.
But it's been a while since we even had that option!
Way to go Coaches!
