Charlie Berry

Charlie Berry from Highland Park committed to the Mustangs as reported today in the Dallas Morning News. He is 6-3 250 4.8 and I think a good, solid player. I think this fills us up other than waiting for Kharylake Martin.

Nice pickup for the Stangs. Bennett said last year he would like to take at least one player from Highland Park every year. Stallion and I were saying just the other day, that we used to have lots of Scots on the team that were not that highly recruited, but turned out to be good players. Guy's like T D Briggs, Kit Case etc... I will take guy's like that anytime, greatwork ethic, winning attitude, and they bring instant butts in Ford Stadium!!!

I agree with you 100%. I saw HP play every game this year and he is a good player and I am glad we got him. Maybe that will also help with Schlegal and Wolcott.

Okay, a DL from HiPark. What did Rivals and the other recruiting information services have on this player?

Does he not like football? Why has no one been recruiting him?

height 6-foot-3
weight 235 pounds
40-yard dash 4.8 seconds
bench max 305 pounds
squat max 550 pounds
vertical leap 31 inches
GPA 4.7

Sure as heck isn't because of his grades.

Maybe it IS because of his grades. You'd have to cheat like hell to get a 4.7!

Berry is a real scholarship player. He played a lot his junior year which is not usual for HP in their senior dominated system. He was along side Rowsey and Karrington most of that year but was hurt about 40% of the season . He was missed during playoffs that year. He is thought well of by his position coach(callahan)who has become friendly with coach Fello and Bennett..Berry is a tough guy, of the same mold as Adami and Karrington. His rivals ranking was probably affected by his lower profile junior year and playing behind Karrington and being played this year at every D-line spot there was. He was by far their best Lineman both O and D at HP this year. SMU is a winner but we were hearing he was leaning strongly toward Georgetown, Navy, AirForce and maybe a mid west school. Good job coaches..

Pretty decent speed for a big man and if he's actually 250 as the DMN says, appears he's put on some weight this year. I like the fact that we are continuing to pick up more local guys. Hope Berry's family is ready for him to bring home a herd of his DL buddies for some of mom's home cooking!

My money says Charlie will be the sleeper of this highly touted recruiting class. He easily deserves better than the 1 star ranking Rivals has given him. They obviously have not contacted him at all this year, as they don't list any schools of interest. Charlie is an absolute beast who our coaches see potential greatness in. He was named all district DL in 12-4A and is a 3rd team all greater DFW metroplex DL as per Bobby Burton's Texas Prep Extra. He's a very hard worker, as evidenced by the fact that he is now every bit of 250 lbs. and has not lost any of his speed. He is working on getting his 40 time down, and will benefit greatly from our conditioning program. One thing that hasn't yet been mentioned is the fact that Charlie is a quality human being. He is a leader, which is something no team can have too much of. I expect that SMU will be good for Charlie, but Charlie will be great for SMU. Congratulations to Charlie and his family. I know they're very excited.

ol jim brought up a great point there. this potential recruiting class seems to be made up of lots and lots of quality individuals, who happen to be good football players. the kind we can be proud of.

actually Berry has been upgraded to a 2 star-generally Rivals will give a kid a 1 star if they don't have info that he is being sought by Division 1 programs-once they find that a player does have decent Division 1 offers such as SMU and Navy they are generally upgraded. A 2 star still represents basically a sleeper at the Division 1 level but with the physically tools to contribute at the Division 1 level. Actually over the years SMU has had very few busts from HP kids even if they weren't highly recruited. They generally have become solid players who contribute earlier in their careers than expected. This is part of rebuilding a pipeline that he been incredibly valuable to this school including Doak, McIllhenny, Richard Neely, Craig Kennington, T.D Briggs, Kit Case, De La Garza. H.P. will produce some top talent and rebuilding that pipeline should pay dividends-

How do you get a 4.7 GPA?

Another HP note: Apparently the QB next year will be a sophomore who's supposed to be a sensational player already. And he's very good friends with an HP student named .... Sam Bennett. Maybe a future Pony?
