Wolcott is a no brainer

Postby Ringer » Sat Jan 25, 2003 2:32 pm

I find it absolutely astounding that anyone that has been associated with SMU Football in anyway would quetion the need for a schalorship kicker. If SMU has any chance at all to sign Wolcott they should jump on it. How many times has SMU lost games over the last ten years due to missed extra points and field goals. This past year's kicking was almost downright embarassing. I am not talking about kickoffs. That was fine. The place-kicking was abysmal. To not have a decent kicker means giving up point every single game. It is not rocket science to figure this no brainer out. It is a scholorship well spent.

That's not the issue...sure we could use a scholarship kicker. There's just not a good enough one out there right now.

Tha is exactly the issue! Wolcott is good enough and certainly a big big improvement over what we have been putting up with the last few years. The coaching mentality has been that it is a waste of a scholorship to give one to a kicker when in all practicality it would have put more w's in the win column. That is a fact. I can not tell you the time I have been in the stands just lamenting the fact that SMU did not have one player on its team that could kick between the upright on a concistant basis. I am talking a whole season of holding your breath just hoping that an extra point is made. Exra points should be almost a given not a hold your breath and hope for the best situation.

Where in world are you going to get a more accurate kicker? 12/14 86% was the best in Texas for last year maybe the best in the US. Insiders is the only place I can find update stats on kickers and I haven't seen any better. It may be too late as the rumor is that he is going to Tech. As I saw it on their board last week.

Maybe on FG's we can just yell "P" for "K".

I played for HP last year. You guys got good players with Berry and Wolcott. I know both personally, very good guys.

Berry lives on our block - besides being a great football player he is a really good person from a great family - his mom and dad went to TCU, and his sister goes to SMU, so they have achieved what we all want, which is for our children do do better in life then we did. He will emerge as a team leader.

I disagree that the Wolcott signing is a no-brainer. As a former walk-on kicker myself (I later earned a scholarship), I can assure you that signing a kicker is usually a very big risk and is never a no-brainer. This is not meant as anything negative about Wolcott or SMU giving him a scholarship because I realize the important role they play, but it is very difficult to know how a kicker will perform once they are forced to kick off of the ground. The same year I walked on at TCU they signed a scholarship kicker. I ended up kicking and he never attempted a FG or extra point in his brief stint at TCU. Just some thoughts from a kicker...and thanks to Mike Vanderjagt for making us all look like jackasses.

I used to post on mustang maniacs and I am not here to troll. Congrats on the much improved recruiting class this year. As I said before SMU hired Bennett (who was at TCU during my senior season), you all have a very good coach and a better person running the football program.

Thanks for the encouragement, Frawg.

And nice Vanderjagt reference! (I'm a former kicker, too, and I can relate to your pain. I cringed when he opened his mouth...)

I agree - the signing is not a no-brainer. But Wolcott is a very good kicker, and with Stephenson apparently gone (see the football board), having someone like Wolcott who can punt and placekick -- even if he fills both roles as a backup -- is vital. So I think the signing was a good move by Coach Bennett.

Bennett said in his press conference that Trent is leaving to pursue medical schools and that he will redshirt Ryan. So MM is our kicker for now.

ReedFrawg -

Great to see you posting over here -

As I recall you and a few others have provided good insight into the SMU-TCU rivalry (as opposed to those who used to just flame back and forth between MM and KF)

you all had a nice haul as well -

You are welcome here anytime!
