I am extremely excited about the potential for this year's class. Besides good athletes, we seem to have gotten a lot of recruits. However, history tells us that of the 23 or 24 players in this class, 4 or 5 will not pan out due to injury or transfer. 4 or 5 will turn out to be very good, and the other 10 or 12 will be average.

History?....what history are you refering to? Football recruiting history? SMU recruiting history? Cavan recruiting history? Bennett recruiting history? Please elaborate. Thanks.

...admit it you don't know what your talking about so just stay off the recruiting board. This is one the few even average recruiting years in the last 15 years so you have very little to compare it with. At least if you going to be a pessimist back it up with something other than negativity. If SMU has 3 mopre recruiting years like this and can keep a reasonable number eligible we will great chance to compete for a Bowl Game in the WAC. You have to walk before you can run and I can see very little reason to be pessimistic when this class is some of the best news we've had around here in years.

and......I would rather have a 3-star recruit play to his 'average' over a 1-star recruit playing to his 'average' any day of the week.

4 years of Bennett and we have quality and depth, something all the top programs have.

Hey,easy Stallion! I wasn't trying to [deleted] anyone off. Every year the DMNews will run a "where are they now" article during recruiting season. This year they will run a story reflecting on the signing class of 1998, and half of the players turn out to be ok college players, some get hurt and quit, and some fall off the face of the earth (see Marcus Mosley). On the flip side, some weren't highly recruited that turn out to be really good college football players (see Chris Bordano). I don't want anyone to get me wrong: I love SMU football and I love the talent Bennet has assembled. I just don't want my SMU friends to begin to think that this one class will be a silver bullet and put us in a bowl next year with a 9-2 record.

...obviously if a couple of our best recruits had "freiends" take the SAT for them, a couple more flunk out, a couple of more have career ending injuries and a couple of more transfer-this class will suck. Does that prove recruiting doesn't matter? We've had about 13 years of poor recruiting years with occassional surprises but with national recognition on graduating players and we've sucked. That proves recruiting does matter. Obviously, it goes without saying that we need to keep the recruits in school to improve. It doesn't take a genius to figure that one out.

Hey M Street Stang, I'm an M Street resident also, so I've got to like you since you obviously have such good taste. I wasn't trying to be flippant when I asked my questions above. We all know that Cavan had a tendency to run players off, though not necessarily on purpose. Also the term "average" is reliant on what you're averaging as to whether it is good or bad to be average.

My main point is that this class is shaping up to be the best for SMU in a long time. We also realize that a bunch of freshmen aren't going to take us to a 9-2 record, but this is a good step in that direction. So lets all stay positive and put our energy toward filling up Ford Stadium next fall.

Stallion, obviously recruiting does matter, which is why we have not been good for the past several years. To put it in simple terms that I know you can understand, not all 23 of these recruits will be studs. A few will, a few won't, and the rest will be pretty good college players. What I am most excited about is that we are now apparently competing for high school players that in the past would not have considered S.M.U. And by the way, "freiends" is spelled f-r-i-e-n-d-s. Have another Coors Light.
