Bennett shuffles SMU football coaching staff
Two new faces added; defensive coaches change duties

UNIVERSITY PARK – SMU football coach Phil Bennett said Wednesday he has hired two assistants and restructured several positions on his defensive staff.
Bennett hired former Southwest Texas offensive coordinator Blake Miller as his offensive line coach. Miller was the offensive line coach at Southwest Texas before taking over as offensive coordinator last season. He replaces Bob Stanley, who left for Kansas State.
Darrell Patterson, who coached linebackers at Baylor for one season under former coach Kevin Steele, will take over the same position at SMU. Patterson was hired to replace defensive ends coach Oscar Giles, who is now at Houston. Giles wanted to coach linebackers at SMU, but his lack of experience hurt him and he wasn't offered the job.
Bennett said defensive coordinator Jim Gush will move off linebackers and coach the secondary. He said Gush's responsibilities as a coordinator mean he needs to coach the secondary, and that move prompted the changes in the staff's responsibilities.
Eric Roark, who had coached the secondary, will coach defensive ends in addition to his duties with the special teams.
"I knew at midseason we needed tweaking," Bennett said of his first year at SMU. "It's just like a company trying to maximize its potential. They're all good coaches, it's just getting the right fit."
Bennett coached Patterson at TCU, where his career total of 544 tackles is a school record. Patterson played linebacker for the Horned Frogs from 1979-82.
