Bench Press

so does SMU have any Lineman that can bench press 450 like Litt'Richuel Massey? That ought to push them some.

Sad to say, but I doubt it. Last night, Bennett mentioned that Charles Berry's bench of 350 made him stronger than many of the current players.

In addition to Massey and Berry, Boren, Turner, Bonds and Jones should all be near the 400 lb. mark by the fall.

This class is strong, fast and athletic.

Massey sounds almost too strong to believe. Nice catch by the coaches.

The Bench press is not a great indication of athletic talent or of athletic strength.

If one can bench press say, 350# then that means one (as one is laying on his back in the field) can push the opponent that is lying on them to the side. In other words, somebody just got put on his or her back and that isn’t good.

In addition, so what if a kid can bench press 500# if his feet are so bad that a 190# kid just scoots around him.

I would rather here more about leg strength and foot speed than about laying on ones back pushing somebody else off.

from what I hear he can lift just about anything you want --anyway you want it. I think he is the State Champion weightlifter in his class.

What amazed me was Massey's squat total: 700lbs. The fact that he still ran a 4.43 and squatted 675lbs 2 days after his cast was taken off is amazing. With a beefier offensive line to open up holes, Massey is going to really be able to compete. I can't wait for two-a-days to hear about the competetion that should be brewing for the starting RB spot. I see Massey as our most potent offensive weapon; he is one of the strongest, if not the strongest RB in the country. I can't wait to see him punish not only some of the WAC's DB's, but also some defensive linemen. He'll definitely be playing next year, as Keylon will be a senior and ShanD a redshirt junior.

If ShanDerrick was granted a medical redshirt (I thought I'd heard he was), he will be a Soph next year.

Yeah, sorry I forgot to correct that. I agree...ShanD is amazing when he's healthy. I was his suitemate over summer school, so what I'm worried about is the time it has taken to heal his injury. At one point he told me he was thinking about quitting b/c the pain was so bad. In any case, I'm thrilled to hear that he's working out again. He's one of my favorite players; he has speed, he has vision, and can make players miss. A healtyh trio of Keylon, ShanD, and Massey could be unstoppable.

Let's just hope he can lift a Bowl Championship trophy.

Bennett said that in addition to asking players not to be in bands (a la Kelan Luker), he also doesn't want them playing hoops any more, since that's how ShanD got hurt. Hard to tell if he was kidding.

I was most impressed by the squat numbers... Massey sounds like a guy who can run over people as well as around them.

I hear the restrictions are expanded to other sports as well. Karrington is a expert snow skier and he was told to temporarily retire. Accordingly I sure there is more of the same with others..
