Did Cavan have a camp?

Postby Dooby » Fri Feb 07, 2003 1:08 pm

This may be dumb, but did Cavan have a football camp? I don't recall. I lived in Houston for all but the end of the Cavan regime.

I ask because it seems that Bennett has used the camp as an excellent recruiting tool.

I think he had it for one year once they moved into Ford. BTW I notice all Fall that U.Houston was off to an unbelievably slow start in recruiting and couldn't figure out why. It seems like a pattern that UH starts slow and finishes fast. Well I noticed on their board that they are looking for funding to have their first summer camp. These camps are vital these days.

Cavan did have one camp, but it wasn't very well-attended. Several HS coaches sent their kids out of town - even out of state - for the camps, so Cavan faced slim pickin's. Whatever players he gleaned from that camp were a credit to him and to his staff. There were a handful of good players, but nothing like the crew that came out for Coach Bennett's camp.

I gather that part of these camps is for HS coaches to participate. I assume this is part of building relationships with HS coaches which will pay dividends in the future. Are these coaches paid?

Right. New Boston coach Ronnie Bickham worked the camp last year, and will do so again this year. Bennett said that was a huge help in landing Cedric Dorsey, and that SMU has real inroads out there.
