I know the rankings dont mean a lot, but they do mean something. That being the case, SMU's class may be a little overhyped. But still better than previous years.
I reviewed Heartland Recruiting rankings and averaged the star rankings, #signings, and # JCs and came up with the following rankings by avg star/player:
1.Texas- 2*-2, 3*-8, 4*-7, 5*-1. Tot signing- 18, AVG*- 3.61, JCs-0
2. TAM- 2*-0, 3- 18, 4-3, 5-1, 22, 3.23, JCs-1
3. TT 2-9, 3-6, 4-6, 5-1. 23, 2.95, 8
4.LAT 2-4, 3-12, 4-2, 18, 2.89, 7
5. Hou 2-11, 3-13, 24, 2.77, 0
6. BU 2-10, 3-13, 23, 2.57, 0
7. FSU 1-3, 2-10. 3-4, 4-1, 5-1, 19, 2.32, 4
8. TCU 2-18, 3-3, 21, 2.14, 1
9. NTSU 1-1, 2-16, 4-1, 18, 2.06, 1
10. Hawaii 1-2, 2-20, 3-2, 24, 1.96, 4
11. BSU- 1-8, 2-12, 20, 2, 1.6
12. Rice* 1-14, 2-6, 3-2, 22, 1.45, 0
13. SMU* 1-13, 2-8, 3-1, 22, 1.45, 0
14. UTEP- 1-11, 2-2, 3-1, 14, 1.29, 2
15. Nev- 1-21, 2-3, 5-1, 25, 1.28, 3
16. Tulsa- 1-15, 2-3, 3-1, 19, 1.26, 3
17. SJSU- 1-27, 2-3, 3-2, 32, 1.22, 12
Rankings does not include K's. * Rice/SMU tied for 12.
Tied for 4th in WAC.

This list looks highly suspect as to it's credibility. A quick glance shows North Tx, who signed no State Top 100's, and I don't believe any Rivals 3 star players, with a higher overall ranking than us. Our class had a significant contigent with bonafide offers from BCS schools.
If this list actually exists, I would use it for some other purpose than information...perhaps as a coaster, a grocery list, or some other utilitarian function

TP....and not the ultra soft kind either.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Hey I'm all for different perspectives and as much factual info as possible but I think it is instructive that La Tech, Baylor and UH are clients of Max Emfinger and the Insiders. I think you all know that I've never been one to shy away from a realistivc evaluation of our recruiting classes but this time I think I'd rather defend it. I take both services but out of the hundreds of recruiting updates I gave-90% were from Rivals because they are more thorough, accurate and up to date. I saw some incredible discrepancies, neglect and just plain lazziness in the Insiders ratings. SMU had 3 consensus Teaxas Top 100 and Midland Top 100 in Rivals-Meeks, Massey and Cleveland. We KNOW these kids are top prospects because they received top offers-except for Meeks who was one of the first recruits in Texas to commit and never waiver. Yet the Insiders gives these guys 2 stars. Look at Baylor's list. They have several players who were given a 3 star who didn't noyt have a single OFFER or VISIT until very late in the recruiting game. One is Nick Fellows of Dallas who as far as I can determine was so far down our list that he never got an OFFER from SMU. Baylor fought off Tulsa for his services and you are going to tell me he is a better prospect than Meeks, Massey or Cleveland. That is just an outrageous discrepancy and it is not uncommon in the Insiders. The Insiders gave Joel Armstrong a 1 star although there was a huge recruiting battle for his services. I'm not sure if they've ever figured out who Kharylake Martin is. If you go to most recruiting boards in this state and observe the comments of the recruiting gurus at each school the knowledgeable ones will scoff at Max Emfinger and the Insiders based on their experience. The main reason they suck is because thet rate the players in June and never seem to adjust their ratings for good play in the senior season or increase or deacreased interest in a player during the recruiting season. In addition, the Insiders and Rivals are philosophical at odds in the rating of JC players with the Rivals limited the number of players who are allowed to be given high star ratings. Each service may have strengths in different regions of the country but Rivals is clearly more accurate in the Southwest and Southeast. Finally, Emfinger is the biggest joke of all-there are about 12 players on his Texas Super Team All-State who did not receive a single Division 1 offer(not including academic risks) and two more who signed with Sam Houston St and Southwest Texas St. So I would say those ratings are interesting but I really am much more suspect in the Insiders than Rivals.

That list seems to me to be without merit. Baylor High ranks seven spots ahead of SMU? Let's see, we kept Massey away from a slew of top schools. We kept schools like Texas A&M and Arkansas from getting Chris Phillips. Justin Boren was getting interest from all over, according to the local papers. Cory Muse was a human tug-of-war between SMU and Oklahoma State.
Meanwhile, Baylor High was waging a heated recruiting battle against Abilene Christian.
If that ranks us below Baylor High, I hope we stay below. We're recruiting players who were wanted everywhere. With a few exceptions, who wanted theirs? Almost nobody.

Hey Guys, I never said that this was a credible list. But it was a published list. After reading your comments, I feel a lot better about our class.

The insiders' ratings are total BS. They have Cleveland, Sturdivant, Massey, Muse and Meeks as two stars. Boren is a three-star player (our only one). Flip the page and look at a lot of the ratings for Texas Tech, and you'll see guys who were considered lesser talents by all of the newspapers and Rivals (Serres, Rawls, Reyes), but yet they have 3 stars. They also have an extreme JUCO fetish.
The biggest evidence of their lack of knowledge is that they list UNT as having 16 2-star players and SMU as having 13 one-star players. They're a joke.

Hey Stallion and Mickey (in particular), Max Emfinger went to Baylor (though I don't know if he actually graduated) and later coached there (so he says). Any ratings he has ever prepared wherein he ranked Baylor and SMU together always shows/ed Baylor with a higher rating. The guy is a bafoon. He got chased out out of Houston and landed in Hammond, La. (which is nothing more than a pitstop for a dragstrip on old Highway 90 heading east through Louisiana - remember I grew up in New Orleans). Emfinger's ratings are worse today than they were back in the 80's and 90's. He has no viable contacts with any coaches (even in Louisiana - and he never did in Texas after he became known as a fraud). I ceased subscribing to anything he sells years ago. And it speaks "worlds" about Jamie his partner who produces Insiders if that slimebag continues to laud and rely upon the "Great Max Emfinger" for ratings and recruiting information. Insiders is entirely worthless! No offense to the originator of this topic, but it is meaningless since it is based upon "alleged information" and "evaluations" made by a [deleted] - Max Emfinger.
Save yourself some money, Stallion and don't re-up your subscription to Insiders.
