JUCO candidates?

Postby HorsePower » Wed Mar 12, 2003 5:06 pm

There's been some speculation since his hiring that Coach Bennett might try to re-stock the roster with JUCO guys. Kansas State is among the schools that have had great success with this approach, and the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference has been a hotbed of talent for years.

Here's a list of the freshmen who will (or could) be eligible after the 2003 season (meaning they were all freshmen in 2002), taken from the league's all-KJCCC team:

FIRST TEAM OFFENSE
QB Walter Washington (Dodge City) - 6'2", 242 (conference Offensive MVP)
WR Bruce Gordon (Dodge City) - 6'0", 195
OT Paul Soliai (Coffeyville) - 6'4", 305

SECOND TEAM OFFENSE
WR Dustin Bromley (Coffeyville) - 5'11", 185
WR Kenyada Tatum (Garden City) - 5'8", 163
OT Woodly Telfort (Dodge City) - 6'8", 310
TB Lee Baker (Coffeyville) - 5'8", 180

SECOND TEAM DEFENSE
DT Freddie Saint-Preux (Dodge City) - 6'5", 300
LB Greg Wilkerson (Butler County) - 6'3", 240

Wonder if Telfort has any footwork. At that size, I can't imagine it would take much to make him serviceable, if not exceptional.

It would dramatically improve the football team if Bennett could get a few Juco players a year. However, it seems many of the top Juco players go to large state schools that have easy degree programs like physical education. It seems unrealistic that SMU can get those top Juco players since many of their credit hours are not accepted at SMU. There also is a hugh risk with Juco players making the grades once they get into a four year university. I believe that Baylor is going through this problem with Coach Steele's Juco recruits. I welcome any feedback on my comments.

neither Rivals nor the Insiders has listed a single JC recruit in Bennett's first two years as interested in SMU-obviously we are not actively recruiting them-I'd save my breath until then.
