Baylor 3 star recruit LB Jon Michael Morgan(6-2,228 4.5) from famed Shreveport Evangel who entered Baylor at midterm has already left the Baylor program during conditioning drills according to Texas Football Magazine. Morgan had committed to Baylor before Steele's firing. The reason I say SMU might be interested is that Morgan attended an SMU camp last year plus SMU's new LB coach Patterson was at Baylor when Morgan was recruited. I can't remember if Patterson was Morgan's position coach at Baylor or not. It would be nice to get a foothold in the top athletic private HS(of course we all know St. Mark's is the top academic HS) in the South region. Some of the top Baylor players who appear to be in academic trouble include former SMU target DT Corey Ford, TE Iris Williams, LB Nathan Uranga, WR J.T. Thompson, WR Charles Radford, B Rashard Armstrong, LB James Washington and LM Jacob Pittman. Perhaps Baylor's top player LB John Garrett is recovering from knee surgery.

What exactly are the procedure and mechanics of taking on a scholarship player previously signed and enrolled? If this player is released from and leaves Baylor at the end of the spring term and is picked up by SMU or another college, when does he sign and start getting scholarship aid? Is the scholarship at the second school immediate even though he sits out a year?

When you talk about top athletic private schools in the south region, I am assuming that you are omitted Military academies that take post graduates, otherwise schools like Fork Union (with two Heisman winners) might merit some consideration and Oak Hill Academy (several pro-players). Best academic private schools in the south. St. Marks is certainly one. MUS in Memphis, Episcopal High School in Virginia, and Woodberry Forest in Virginia are three that are probably in the same ballpark.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

I just looked at the Baylor High website to try to find a bio and a picture of this kid, and there's nothing to be found about him.
What I did find, and found interesting, was that their new head coach Guy Morriss has a new message for his team: "Smile and have fun."
With that kind of motivation, I'm sure they'll be out of the Big 12 cellar in no time. You can't beat inspiration like that.

he just enrolled mid-term-lasted about 2 months even though his Dad was a Baylor letterman. He wont be eligible until the 2004 season because he would have to sit out a year. He was a 3 star Rivals recruit this recruiting season.

His HS senior numbers, according to the Waco paper:
As a senior, Morgan had 59 tackles, five stops behind the line and three pass breakups for a defense that gave up just 11 points and 187 yards per game. The Eagles won another state championship this year, going 14-1 and dominating West Monroe, 35-4, in the final.
SMU! SMU! SMU!

The word was that Morgan couldn't hack the conditioning drills and quit after a few weeks and went home.
There was another story published in the Baylor Insider that quoted a member of Steele's staff as saying that Steele and co. had recruited one kid that was so slow for his position that they basically took him to be a backup.
As ridiculous as that last statement sounds, nothing that the Steele regime did surprises me. Although the statement didn't name who the kid was, based on its context, the implication was that it was Morgan of whom they were speaking.
It will be interesting to see where Morgan winds up, but I seriously doubt that Bennett would be interested in him.
Speaking of context, PonyExpress' comments about "Smile and have fun" are a bit misleading. Morriss stated that the players seemed very tentative because they were eager to prove themselves to the new coaching staff and were overly worried about making mistakes. Morriss basically said what he did because although there is a lot of hard work that goes into football, it is still a game and that the players should not lose sight of that and have fun in what they are doing.
Morriss' real message to the players since day one has been: Get ready to work.

Thanks for the update, Sic_Em. And you're right, I did take that a little out of context. Just thought the headline on the Baylor site was a little amusing.
