At a time it appears a kicker is needed (none signed on scholarship in 2012 class),
SMU has one interested!

#1 ranked kicker in Texas and #3 - #15 in Nation by multiple ranking services wants to come to SMU.
He came on unofficial visit to A&M game, attended last year's Springfest and great student.

He also competed under great pressure and won the spot for the 2013 International Bowl (USA vs. the World) selected by Kohl's Kicking.

His name is Matthew McCrane, kicker 2013 class, Brownwood, TX.
He has not committed yet but if SMU would offer him, he would probably commit.

He used to play Olympic Development Program soccer in Dallas and when younger, had the dream to play soccer for SMU, but switched over to football a few years back.
One of his former teammates, Derek Longoria is already on team.

Before you reply, why waste a scholarship on a kicker?, look at this video.

1967, you don't have to convince anyone on this board that we should spend a schollie on a kicker.

I need to be convinced. Why even carry a kicker? Time to advance football and go for it on every down and onside kick on every kickoff.

Have we onside kicked in the last two years where the ball went more than 10 yards?
:?

Kids got a hell of a leg there. Hopefully it holds up when he has a rush coming at him.

Not giving this kid a schollie would be incredibly stupid, IMHO. If I'm a coach, I give any top ten kicker in the country a scholarship. If I couldn't get a top ten then I go for a walk-on. I know it's a scholarship that could be used on a "position" player but, really? I mean is the 85th guy gonna save your butt at the end of the game with a 50 yard FG? Nope.

Oh, by the way, he is also second leading receiver on his team and tonight against Burnet went 1-1 on FG and 100% on extra points and caught a touchdown pass and had 70 plus yards receiving on 4 catches. Only had one touchback but strong wind blowing and majority of kickoffs up wind.
Brownwood 25- Burnet 12.
Matthew McCrane accounted for 11 of 25 points but was a great team win as the defense played very well also.

He received one full ride offer a few days ago but really likes SMU.

who needs a kicker. I enjoy being "out of field goal range" beyond the 10 yard line.

Hey CougarKing,
aren't you on the wrong website? LOL
Ty Cummings is an excellent kicker, you are correct.
There are many ranking services. Rivals and ESPN primarily use Kohls Kicking rankings and Matthew has only attended one of their camps versus many others. Jamie Kohl runs an excellent program, and his staff are the ones that helped select Matthew for the 2013 International Bowl. (USA vs the World)

Matthew McCrane has worked with National Camp Series and ranked #3 in Nation in kickoff/FG's combined.

Ranked #1 in Texas by texashsfootball.com and as the #79 overall ranked recruit(All positions, all classifications). #1 kicker listed. Only three total listed.
http://www.texashsfootball.com/recruiti ... top200.htm

Matthew also plays starting WR and backup QB when needed.
This is an article from game last night...

Once again, Ty is a solid kicker and wish him well at Houston.
We are talking about SMU on this site.
