Saban: LSU QB Clausen will transfer
BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU quarterback Rick Clausen has received his scholarship release and plans to transfer to another Division I-A school, a newspaper reported Tuesday.
LSU coach Nick Saban told The Advocate of Baton Rouge that Clausen has not decided which school he'll attend. Kent Lowe, an LSU spokesman, told The Associated Press Tuesday that he could not confirm Clausen's transfer.
Clausen, who would have been a sophomore in the 2003 season, plans to sit out this season and will have two remaining years of eligibility in 2004 and 2005, The Advocate said.
Clausen, a younger brother of Tennessee star quarterback Casey Clausen, threw for 3,361 yards his senior year at Taft High in Woodlawn Hills, Calif. He graduated in 2000, and joined LSU for spring drills in 2001. He played in three games last year.
Clausen started against Ole Miss last season but struggled, completing 2-of-6 passes for 9 yards with an interception and a fumble. He finished 5-of-12 for 35 yards on the season.
In February, LSU signed two nationally recruited quarterbacks -- JeMarcus Russel of Mobile, Ala., and Matt Flynn of Tyler, Texas. Junior starters Matt Mauck and Marcus Randall will return as well as senior Michael Harrison, freshman Lester Richard and junior Ty Barrett.
