Looking For Opportunity

Micah Berteau Profile

Micah Berteau (5-10, 171, 4.5) is a cornerback on the West Coast who is known for shutting down opposing receivers.

The Hughson, Calif. native picked off five passes as a junior and registered 55 tackles. His senior year is right around the corner and that means he will soon get the opportunity to show off his skills to the college coaches who are looking at him.

“Utah called the other day and some other WAC schools call,” Berteau told TheInsiders. “La. Tech, Fresno State, Vanderbilt and Middle Tennessee State are a few more that call. Tulane is recruiting me but I kind of lost interest in them. That is the ones I know that are kind of interested. They all want to see me play my senior year and that is fine with me.”

After attending camps at La. Tech and SMU over the summer, Berteau showed those college coaches that despite his size he has what it takes to play Division-I football.

“I went to Tech and SMU’s camp and they said I shut down every guy I went against,” said Berteau. “I have good cover skills. Not that I don’t like hitting but my cover skills stand out.”

I'm still not sure what his connection is to this part of the country - living in California and attending camps at SMU and LaTech? Whatever the reason, it sounds like he can cover. And we all know Coach Bennett puts a premium on guys who can cover.

He certainly is convinced that he can cover. I really admire modest young men.

That's not unusual. When you consider that nearly every college freshman was a star at his high school, most HS corners who play at the next level enjoyed great success in high school. I'd think it's understandable that he'd be confident. And when you consider that CBs have to have short memories - they have to remain confident, even if they get beat for a long gain or a touchdown - a healthy dose of confidence would be vital to playing the position, I'd think.

Spoke with some folk out in Nor Cal to find out about the kid. Apparently he is well considered, but generally overlooked as he is at a small school and they don't get a lot of attention. Word is that he is starting to draw attention, maybe that is why he has been going to camps out of CA. While he may not end up at SMU, he could prove himself a good talent elsewhere.
