Stallion Question

Postby SoCal_Pony » Wed Oct 01, 2003 10:42 pm

I realize this is a slow period for recruiting, but should we be concerned that we have not received a commitment in 2 months?

When should we start getting commitments again?

No not really its a pretty dead period. What we should be concerned of are the players who attended the Oklahoma St. debacle. Reports of SMU targets who attended that game have been negative since then at least on Rivals and it appears that guys like the big DT James McClinton and Darcel McBath are basically looking elsewhere. Also, DBs DNerian Wrighter and Material Richardson of Marlin appear to be looking elsewhere. BTW both are marginal students anyway and Richardson does not have a qualifying score and Wrighter only has a borderline 820. There is a momentum to recruiting and if a program ever loses it it is tough to get back as we saw with Mike Cavan which is why we need to win at least 4 games this year.

What is it Corso says? "Not so fast, my friend"?

I read that Matterial Richardson is still considering SMU.

And remember, Cory Muse was at last year's SMU/OSU game -- having already committed to the Cowboys -- and he still ended up coming to SMU. I would think it's way too early to give up on any of these guys just yet.

Stallion,

I agree with your assessment and believe had we recruited 5 key JCs over the past 2 years, we would be 2-2 with the very real possibility of going 3-0 in WAC play.

I also believe 2 JC big men on our BB team last season would have meant an NIT bid.

That’s 7 students in total, but a world of difference in perception and momentum at one of the most critical times in our school’s athletic history.

I’m sure glad we are doing this the “right way”.

exactly and it is how schools like Kansas and Houston have been able to bridge those years between a new regime that picks up recruiting and the year when those recruits can really help in their 3-4 th year.
