Highest ranked recruit ever on campus?

Have we ever had the #2 ranked national recruit on campus for a visit before? The basketball staff continues to recruit like I've never seen in my 20 years of following SMU. I wish they could help the football staff.

What was Dickerson ranked? Or are we just discussing BB?

Dickerson was Ranked No. 1 by at least 1 service-couldn't tell you which one 30 years later though. I think the national guy everybody paid attention to back then was Joe Terranova. Nobody cared much back then as long as Texas Football rated him No. 1

Here's a National Blue Chip List-with Dickerson No. 1
Geez its ridiculous SMU had 8 MATIONAL Top 100s
Now we might 1-2 TEXAS Top 100s year

DE Billy Don Jackson from Sherman was the No. 1 Recruit in the Country in 1976. Actually signed the old SWC Letter of Intent with SMU but then a week later signed National Letter of Intent with UCLA.

That's a great find, Stallion. It is unbelievable we used to recruit at that level in football.

It's interesting that JJ was pushing for LB to come to SMU. Now that LB's here and we see how well a staff of talented, hungry recruiters can actually generate interest from top level recruits, it exposes the lack of success/effort going into football recruiting.

Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall during a Brown/Jones conversation about recruiting?

I'm sure JJ avoids that conversation.

While I do agree with you to a degree, you have to take into account the differences between football and basketball. You can be in a small conference in bball and have success and compete for national titles (Gonzaga, Butler, Menphis, etc), but it just doesn't work that way in football. If football were to have a more expanded playoff (I'm a proponent of 8), then maybe conference affiliation wouldn't matter as much since all you need to be is on a good team to get to the tournament. 16 teams would make it matter even less and would help out hte little guy for sure.

But yes, June sucks at recruiting. Go Larry

I agree with you to some degree too but we are recruiting at top 10 level in basketball, not a small conference level. the Zags and Butler rarely get top 25-50 recruits. And it's not like we are just randomly throwing offers out to these 4 and 5 star players. We are in almost everyone we offer's top 4-5.

Another thing that should be mentioned is we have absolutely no recent history of basketball success for these guys to use in recruiting, football does - four straight bowl games and while recruits may not have seen him play, they know and have heard of Dickerson. IMO, it is all about effort from the staff and the guy leading the way.The Basketball staff is all in, the football staff is collecting a paycheck.

I'd argue very few 17 and 18 year olds have any idea who Eric Dickerson is. I don't think we have any real football history in that generation's minds.

I agree there are recruiting differences in football and basketball. But the most glaring difference between the two coaches is the (perceived) difference in effort put in to recruiting. LB seems to be flying all over the country with his staff every free weekend whereas you rarely hear of the football staff doing much of anything except waiting for tapes to come in to the office for kids looking for a D1 offer.

Wasn't Larry Johnson pretty much the consensus no 1?
