Maybe the big WR everyone wants?

Postby Lotus » Thu Oct 09, 2003 12:33 pm

WR Brendan Holm (6-3.5, 196) of Victoria (St. Josephs), Texas has SMU his list of schools he's considering. Couldn't find a 40 time for him, but supposedly he ran a 4.31 in the 20-yard shuttle (decent, but not great). His vertical jump of 27.6" is OK, but not sensational. Remember, when he signed, Chris Cunningham was called "not overly fast" .... and that's hardly held him back from having a great career. A 6-3 Comet would be a pretty nice addition to SMU's -- or any -- offense.

As far as I can tell, he's considering (in addition to SMU) Army, Colorado, Dartmouth, Harvard, Navy, Notre Dame, Princeton and TCU.

Sorry, we're not allowed to offer him a scholarship. Victoria St. Joseph knocked my alma matter TCA our of the TAPPS 5A State Semifinal last year due to this kid. We had a solid halftime lead, but this kid had a 50-yard TD reception and a 70-yard fumble return for a TD that put us away.

So maybe this kid has slightly better quicks than Lotus would have us believe?
Throw him out there with (6'4") Bobby Chase, and the QBs will have a completely different look at WR.

Well "Comet" honestly never did exactly live up to the speed his nickname suggests. What's he run? A 4.5? 4.49 on a good day?

Coach Cavan once told me that he didn't think Cunningham ever ran below a 4.6 in the 40, maybe a 4.7. I don't know if that's true -- he always looked pretty fast to me -- but he's been a sensational player at SMU. Even as a true freshman, he was able to find seams in the defense and get open, and when the ball is thrown to him, he seems to make the catch. And Punt returning is something that utilizes speed, and Comet entered this season less than 100 yards off the school record for career punt return yardage.

I don't know what Coach Cavan was talking about - I'll take a team full of Comets any day.

"He's not tall enough."
"He's not fast enough."

That was the rhetoric from recruiting "experts." What they overlooked about Cunningham was that he's a hell of a football player.

Cunnigham was highly rated by the recruiting experts-so I guess their not as dumb as you think.

anyone who saw the Comet play as a true frosh appreciated his talent. Quickness and NO FEAR. How many times did he go over the middle and get absolutely blasted...but usually hung onto the ball and made big play after big play. Hey, Drew Pearson was too small and too slow, too. Remember him? I sure wish we used the middle of the field more in our passing game today.

I've seen us try to use the middle of the field a number of times and most of the time the ball was dropped (or so it seems to me)...not sure if going to the middle caused that, but that has been the results. It would be ideal for the TE, but I think they are being used for blocking to try to give Bartel some protection.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
