That's great. A Juco's number one priority is usually immediate playing time due to a lack of remaining years. We got plenty of that around here.

What about the QB in Kansas? Can this guy run at all as he will need to. More importantly, can he find a receiver, unlike Wallis?

Blinn bounces back with win over Cisco

The Blinn Buccaneers bounced back from last week's loss to NEO with a 51-19 pounding of the Cisco Wranglers.

A huge reason for the win was the play of running back Derrick Ross, who after being held under 100 yards for the first time all season against NEO, responded with 255 yards on 19 carries.

"We knew coming in that they (Cisco) didn't defend the run all that well and we felt we could exploit that area today," Blinn head coach Scott Maxfield said. "I think once we spread out our offense it opened up things even more for Derek. He's a gifted athlete and that showed today."

Blinn was also successful in the passing game with Dane King throwing for 207 yards while completing 19 of 33 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown. That lone touchdown went to Rashod Turner, who led the Bucs in receiving with nine catches for 133 yards. In all, the Bucs compiled 619 yards of total offense and hogged the ball most of the evening.

Despite the win, Maxfield still wasn't pleased with his team's performance, especially committing 26 penalties for nearly 200 yards.

"I'm very disappointed in our play, I think we played down to our opponent and our offensive execution wasn't good at all," Maxfield said. "Our defense was pretty solid and held their own but as a whole this was a very sloppy game."


Blinn didn't score until their third possession, when Ross bullied his way into the end zone from one-yard out to give the Bucs the early 7-0 lead. Tim Jones then intercepted a Cisco pass and set the Bucs up with great field position at their own 30-yard line. Ross would cap the drive with another short touchdown from three yards away to put Blinn up 14-0 with 13:25 to play in the second quarter.

Cisco would respond nicely with a 75-yard drive that ended in a one-yard touchdown run by Brian Taylor. The extra point wasn't successful though because the Wranglers mishandled the snap. Therefore, the Bucs led 14-6 with 8:38 in the second quarter.

The Wranglers wouldn't get any closer however, as on the very first place from scrimmage Dane King connected with Turner on a screen that turned into a 74-yard touchdown run down the sideline to make it 20-6. Both teams would score a touchdown each before the half, the Bucs' score coming on a 16-yard run by Treeo Gibson, who finished with three rushing touchdowns on the day.

Blinn outscored Cisco 24-7 in the second half with mostly reserves seeing the field. Kevin Austin had his highlight of the day on a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown which made the score 44-12.

Blinn athletic director Don Wihelm was honored at halftime as he was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame.

With one regular season game left to play at Navarro, Maxfield feels like the Bucs need to finish the season with a strong performance.

"Our whole team just needs to play smarter, more disciplined football," he said. "If we continue to get penalties and play sloppy like we did tonight then we can't expect to win once we get in the playoffs."

Blinn will close the season at Navarro Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Corsicana.

Also one for BUS - Blinn has an OT transfer from Duke so grades should not be a problem he is 6-5 and weighs 310. maybe we could get a package deal along with the WR we have allready signed.

Where did he play high school?

Duke transfer, Bellville graduate leading Buccaneer offensive line

The Blinn College football coaches didn't exactly have a difficult decision to make when Bellville High School graduate Kurt Falke walked into their offices and asked about a position on the team.

"He walked in right after Christmas and we were having a recruiting meeting and in walks a kid who's 6'6", 320 pounds who's local," Blinn head coach Scott Maxfield said. "It was a pretty easy decision on our parts."

Falke, a redshirt sophomore this season, came to the Blinn coaches after spending a year and a half at Duke. Frustrations with Duke's rigorous academic program and homesickness combined to convince Falke that he'd be better off attending school closer to his family.

"I think it's been a lot easier," Falke said. "My parents keep me in line so that's good, and I still get to see friends from back home. I don't have to worry about not seeing my family for six months."

Falke, who said getting back into Division I football is still a priority in his college career, has received interest from Central Florida, Middle Tennessee St., Louisiana-Lafayette and Syracuse.

"There's no doubt that he'll have an opportunity to go back to Division I," Maxfield said. "He can be one of the most highly-recruited guys on our team because of his physical stature and because he's got good academics. Academically, he's very strong. Athletically, he's 6'6", 320 pounds. There's not many guys like that walking around."

Falke would like to stay in Texas, but not many Texas schools are recruiting him, he said.

In the meantime, Maxfield is happy to have him.

"For our pass protection, he's huge," he said. "He's very important to us and what we do offensively. He's a big kid that understands the game and is a good football player. He brings a lot of character to our team. He's a stabilizing force."

The biggest difference between playing at Blinn and playing at Duke was the speed at which players were inserted into the system, Falke said.

"Practice-wise, the biggest difference is the speed we learn everything," he said. "At Blinn, there's not four years to learn everything, so you have to step in and be ready to go. The size of the players is just a little bit different, but not much."

Finding athletes like Falke who come from the surrounding area is important to the Blinn football program, Maxfield said.

"We like to have as many as we possibly can just because of the interest in the community and that it will bring more people to the games, but a lot of times the local kids want to get out of the area, so it's a double-edged sword," he said. "Sometimes it's difficult to get them to come."

Falke and the Buccaneers will face their biggest test so far this season when they host Kilgore at 7 p.m. Saturday at Spencer Stadium.

Phil Steele had the Falke kid rated #253 among all OL nation wide out of high school. By comparison our top OL recruit in 2001 was # 306 nationally. For the life of me I do not know why we wouldn't be looking at this kid.

plus in all likelihood he could easily qualify since he got into Duke-he would shore up a definite weakness next year. I'm sure that the SMU coaches are evaluating him since Chase and King play at the same school. If he's got any talent other than being huge I'm sure we would offer this guy.

Not to be rude (or more rude than normal), but stick this guy next to Grant Eidson and Bryan Turner, and suddenly being 6'6" and 320 is a talent in and of itself.

Blinn QB named player of the week

For the second week in a row a member of the Blinn College Buccaneer football team has been named Offensive Player of the Week by the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Quarterback Dane King led the 11th-ranked Bucs to a 69-7 victory over Ranger College Saturday night in Brenham.

The 6-2, 205-pound sophomore from Gonzales set schools records by throwing for 437 yards and six touchdowns. On the day he was 24-of-36 passing and rushed for 27 yards on four carries.

The previous week, running back Derrick Ross earned the top offensive honor after scoring four touchdowns and rushing for 281 yards in Blinn's 66-22 win over Cisco Junior College.

The 3-0 Bucs open Southwest Junior College Football Conference play at home Saturday against Kilgore College at 7 p.m.

For those thinking this may be evidence of a change in policy, I would doubt it. King has a 3.20 GPA. He's on the academic honor roll. Google is an amazing thing. Couldn't find his major, though.

Unless that Falke kid is slower than a dead man, he HAS to be on SMU's wish list. And judging by the list of schools showing interest, I'm betting he's not that slow (for a lineman).

Falke was second team OT as a redshirt freshman at Duke before he transfered to Blinn.
