Insiders is reporting that DB Chris Spears (6-1, 180, 4.45) of Mansfield (Summit), Texas, has scheduled a visit to SMU in January.

The website describes him as "Rangy prospect that offers size and speed at either cornerback or safety. Plays physical, and has good hips. Has the footwork to play cornerback."

At the moment, it sounds like he has equal ("medium") interest in Colorado (visited 10/24/03), SMU (will visit 1/09/04), Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota and Texas Tech. No offers have been extended yet.

Spears has become a popular recruit lately. Colorado and Kansas liked him all along, but Iowa, Minnesota and Tech have really increased their interest in him lately. He's a very strong kid (I have him at 185 pounds) who has maintained good speed and quickness. I'd think if he adds any more size/weight, he'll end up at safety in college. Still a little raw in some techniques, but colleges obviously see past that, choosing instead to focus on his athleticism and hitting ability.
