The recuits name is Devin Lowery and he graduated in 2002. Was Rhett Bowmar's primary receiver that year. In 2002, Lowery caught 56 passes for 1,121 yards and was named first-team all-state by the Associated Press. The article says that he has been offered a scholarship and plans to accept in the next 2 weeks. He will be in school for the spring semester! :thumbupcool:

I'm excited about this kid-I'd heard some rumors about this unnamed recruit awhile ago and put 2 and 2 together a week ago. Averaged more than 20 yards per catch in 5A. Note article mentions he was on the Dallas Morning News All Greater DFW Metro First Team-not a bad group. He was First Team All State. Made Max Emfinger's Super All-State Team (which really reflects top performanes rather than just college potential). We desperately need quality receivers and I'm pretty excited to get a kid like this standing at 0-12. Even better since he never enrolled in JC he can enroll at mid-term and go thru Spring Drills. I would think he's got a good chance to help us as early as next year.

My source told me that Rhett really wanted him to follow him up to Oklahoma, but he has always wanted to come to SMU. Hope it is as great an experience for him as it was for me in 1972!

I guess the other question is whether he counts towards our scholarship total this year (2003) or next (2004). If it is this year, I assume that he is using Bartel's available scholarship. Given that 9 scholarships are still available for next year's class, if we have 18 to give, I also assume that we will still have 9 available for next year. Stallion, I figure that you can sort this out for us. Thanks for your input!

well the only relevant limit at this point is the 85 man limit so it won't matter what year he counts on but if the 25 man limit were not an issue we could add him to last years number and still sign 25 more. I bet we see a few more scholarships open up but 18 would be acceptable. Probably not a great year for us to have to sign 25 anyway with our record.

From hearing about this kid on this board today and earlier, I have been wondering two things:

Is this kid even enrolled or playing this year anywhere? From what I can tell, he's not. Is this what is called a "grey-shirt"?

Would this kid have been recruited by SMU before this year? From what I can tell, he would not have been.

Hate to be positive Stallion, but as Richard Dreyfuss said to Bill Murray in "What about Bob?"- Baby steps.

Not moving as quickly as many of us would like, but there is some progress-slow progress. Not glacier slow, but slow.

Stallion,
Do you know what other schools were interested in him?

he was in the Rivals Database last year as a 2 star with interest from Baylor, Tech, and Houston but when a kid ain't qualified the interest dies out pretty quick and the recruiting services aren't likely to closely follow his recruitment even if he had a great senior year. Hey 20 yards per catch in a Top 5A District with a bundle of catches is what the coaches are looking for. By comparison for example Jamond Cleveland had a lot more receptions in High School something like 92 his senior year but he only got about 10 yards per catch. This kid got much more yards in almost 40 less catches.

Are you concerned he may be too tall for SMU? I was thinking the same thing.

20 yards per catch against the defenses he faced is impressive. Very impressive.

Yeah - if over 5-9, I think we should pass.

just kidding for those who don't pick up on the sarcasm. Are we not targeting 6-2 plus guys? this guys seems great - no slam on him, I'm just asking - I guess it comes down to available speed and size, and I guess I'll shut up now since I am answering my own questions.

we have Bobby Chase and Jay Taylor next year. Both of those guys will be big targets, not to mention the tight end position with Chase, Kennedy and Hodges. Need some speed burners to spread the field and this guy sounds like one.
