TCU pulls off JC Coup

Postby Stallion » Wed Dec 17, 2003 11:08 pm

TCU just got a commitment from one of the Top JCs in the Country in CB Quincy Butler from Tyler JC. He is a 4 star recruit sought coast to coast. He is TCU's 6th JC recruit-most of them being national recruits who could have gone just about anywhere. On the other hand, TCU's freshman class can only be described as AVERAGE and certainly disappointing considering their record.

Quality, mature JC players!!! Naww We don't want that. We don't want to lose the excuse that we lost because we are young and inexperienced.

Well, essentially, TCU by being great at JUCO recruiting and BAD at HS, has given themselves 7-8 starters for 2 years, and 15-18 guys to sit the bench for 4 years... you have to get 'starting' material out of your HS recruits as well.

If you did that every year, you wouldn't have enough players to fill a starting roster.

Now, ideally, I'd like our current commitments PLUS 4 JUCO 'starters'

Of course, if TCU continues to recruit JUCO players, then it doesn't matter if their high school recruits are bad, they just replace them in a couple of years.

That said, I think Stallion is being quite kind when referring to TCU's HS recruiting class as average. They really are struggling in high school recruiting this year.

Does anyone know what other school transfers TCU has? Probably an accurate comparison is transfers + JUCOs, rather than just comparing JUCOs. Their JUCO recruits, however, are much higher rated than ours, no matter how you cut it.

off the top of my head they got a kid named Anderson who was a Texas Top 30 a couple of years ago who original committed to UT before changing to TCU because he wasn't qualified. They have another DLM who has had some struggles qualifying but in the past was SIGNED by both Tennessee and Arkansas. They got a WR named Drew Coffman who couldn't even graduate from JC after his second year-I've heard second hand reports that he was a JC All-American a year ago(as a KR) but really haven't confirmed that myself. They also have a TE and DE who were both 3 stars and had several other quality offers.

Again, there is a reason that TCU and our competition is better than us. There is a reason that SMU struggles to score points and stay competitive. We are not bad by accident. TCU is a similarly situated school that competes by allowing their coaches to recruit. Their JUCO recruits will pay immediate dividends while our high school recruits will take several years to develop. The only risk is keeping the JUCO'S eligible. But since TCU has athlete friendly majors, it should not be difficult. It is frustrating that a few quality JUCO lineman for us would make a world of difference. It would mean the difference between winning seasons and winless seasons. Another question....where are the O-line and D-line recruits? A recruiting class of RBs and CBs doesn't cut it. Wake up Copeland....Change the policies or forever be a loser AD.

What makes you think it's COPELAND?

It's the ACADEMIC ADMINISTRATION, dude! Change takes time, and Turner started this process of unraveling Pye's crap several years ago.

It's important to note that by the time Copeland arrived at Virginia, they had already loosened their academic restrictions for athletes to a level much more permissible than SMU's present one. On Copeland's watch, they signed Ferrum J.C. and Fork Union guys every year, most notably future Seattle Seahawk Chris Warren (reportedly dumb as a post), and they fielded competitive teams.

This idea that Copeland is clueless about what changes need to be made to compete at the Div. 1 level is just absurd. Trust me, he knows. If you want to point your finger, aim over Copeland's head.

I'm glad somebody finally pointed out his success at Virginia, and directed the blame a little higher. 7 bowl appearances under Coach Welsh, including three weeks at No. 1 in 1991, clearly he can't run an athletic department.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's look at what Copeland has done for SMU during his tenure in the revenue sports...
Men's Basketball appearances - 0
Football winning seasons - 1
Bowl appearances - 0

The model must be changed!

You missed the point, if you recruit 7-8 JUCOs a year, then you only have 15 starters. JUCOs get 2 years ONLY. So 7+7, or 8+8...that is, if your HS recruiting sucks, that ain't gonna cut it long term either. They have to have SOME good HS.

Realistically, Patterson hasn't been recruiting all that well for 3 years now, he has to go JUCO, and he may see a downfall after the next 1-2 years coming up, so he is going for it now. a la Fran.

Truthfully I don't and never have thought it was Copeland but quite frankly I believe they all set themselves up from HEAVY, HEAVY criticism by trying to sell this COMMITMENT crap and by using Cavan as a scapegoat to deflect criticism from where it really belongs. Big Jim and the Good Times Cheerleaders can't have it both ways.

Same story every year, everyone become a recruiting guru and bases the rest of the country's recruiting based on stars that a bunch of geeks on the telephone assign a player.

Truth is, TCU's recruiting is just in line with years past, just a little ahead of schedule. Gary's ability to scout talent has been bad, just like GRGB said. He keeps bringing in terrible players, Like 3/4 of our starters now. Hobbs, Merrill, Gunn, Battle, Rodgers, Harmon, Taylor.

Anyone notice TCU put three freshmen on CFN's freshmen all-american team? Here's a quote from them:

And a quick scan of the breakdown by team will also answer the question of who’s been excelling on Signing Day: Four representatives from Florida, Miami and USC. And three each from LSU, Texas, Michigan, Georgia, UCLA, North Carolina and TCU

As far as the Juco's go. I have heard that these guys are good, but rivals ranks most of their Juco's high, just to get more people to subscribe...the Jucos aren't included in their top 100 rankings, so they can throw out all of the stars they want, and not mess up their bogus system for getting UT and A&M alums to pay the salaries at Rivals.
