Enough is enoughWe have plenty of QB's, DB's and the like.
Where are the BIG MEN Dag Nabit. I like to think of them as the American Express Card. You can't go anywhere without them. Get it. Sure hope the last 5 ships go to developmental BIG MEN or maybe two JUCO's linemen. Ha Ha Go Mustangs Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
Re: Enough is enoughI hate to disappoint you but quite frankly SMU only appears to be in on one OLM (Eddie Rollman of Burnet) and one defensive lineman (James MCClinton) who appear to be worth a damn anyway. Maybe throw in G Sean Lobo as well. That's one reason I have been saying the depth of quality players we are recruiting is thin. Remember though that I think every single Offensive Lineman recruit over the last two years has redshirted so that will make it easier to deal with. But it is shocking that we have so few(or any) linemen committed.

Re: Enough is enoughHow many more Lineman do you want? Look how young all of these guys are...I think we need more help at skill positions.
I mean, I understand we don't want to skip many years without adding Linemen, but if we do land the two that we have on our list, we will be pretty well off. 97 Dominic Pryor DE 6-4 240 FR-HS Red Oak, Texas (Red Oak) 53 Reggie Carrington LB 6-1 242 FR-RS Tomball, Texas (Tomball) 95 Brad Bean DT 6-3 245 SO-1L Duncanville, Texas (Duncanville) 30 Don Ieremia-Stansbury DE 6-2 245 SO-1L El Paso, Texas (Irvin) 90 Melvin Williams DE 6-2 245 JR-2L Elysian Fields, Texas (Elysian Fields) 92 Charlie Berry DL 6-3 250 FR-HS Dallas, Texas (Highland Park) 54 Clay Glockzin DE 6-4 255 JR-0L College Station, Texas (A&M Consolidated) 55 Lucky DeLay DE 6-4 255 FR-HS Irving, Texas (MacArthur) 68 Randy Denman DT 6-2 260 FR-RS Dayton, Texas (Dayton) 66 Ben Poynter OL 6-4 260 FR-HS Arlington, Texas (Arlington-Lamar) 89 Ryan Kennedy TE 6-5 264 FR-RS Beeville, Texas (A.C. Re: Enough is enoughI agree that we now have "numbers" on both lines. If quality guys are available, we do need to bring them in. McClinton appears to be one of those who could jump ahead of plenty of the guys on that list. I also agree we need PLAYMAKERS and can't recruit enough speed!
Bottom line in this debate is that you can't teach/coach SIZE and/or SPEED. We need all the 280-300 lb and 4.4-4.5 guys we can get. As the old coach said: "I don't ever remember LOSING a game because we were bigger, stronger and faster than our opponents" [ 12-18-2003, 03:47 PM: Message edited by: Charleston Pony ]
Re: Enough is enoughGRGB - nice job backing up your position.
Unless a real stud lineman wants to sign with SMU in February 2004 we are better off using the remaining scholarships on playmakers.
Re: Enough is enoughI read that the DT's are
245 - Small D-end or linebacker 260 - Good D-end 276 - Good D-end 279 - Still light for DT 294 - Jone has promise 313 - that's what I'm talking about but needs time to catch up to the speed of the game. We are small on the D-line. Face it. McClinton would step right in. I do not remember the 279 Lake Highlands guy. Is he somewhat quick? Yes, with the red-shirts we are better just not there in my mind. Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
Re: Enough is enoughWell, I want as many big guys as we can get too. But, we weren't 'dominated' at the line this year...I mean, we didn't dominate much either, but, as we are told, many of our best OL were redshirting, or were sitting the bench because a FR would simply make too many mistakes vs even a lesser gifted older lineman. Just looking at the size and numbers of our linemen (I counted 32) coming back, I don't think this is a huge focus. But, landing 2-3 good ones would be reasonable, and then maybe 5-6 next year... Like the koolaide that Bennett has been passing out, we need playmakers. This ALLEN RB seems to be rising fast and he committed to us late, so I think that should be a a pretty solid one. I'd like to see the linemen we have in the pipe land...but it usually is a numbers game. We have fewer 'options' than other schools...
Re: Enough is enoughWell, add 10-15 lbs to each player for next year. DTs around 290 are on the larger side. Our two freshmen DTs were both over 310..FRESHMEN. They are losing fat and gaining muscle this year. DEs over 265 are good to go. Under Rossley we had one year as the 2nd largest starting OL...well, we won 5 gtames. I want size too, but since the weights listed are FRESH/RS FRESH they have room to improve... I would have the same worries as you if they were Jr/Sr going into next year with those weights.
Re: Enough is enoughYou make some good points - I guess it comes down to I"M TIERD OF LOSING.
We did get blown off the line. Facts - our passing d was bad becuse of no or little push on QB. HOW MANY runs per game did it take to get our RB yards. not much push there. Come on Red Shirts. BIG MEN I remember 82 and 83 when we had two starting O-lines and two starting D-lines. 6 plus 6 and 4 plus 4 thats 20 right off the bat plus developmental players. I don't want much do I? Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
Re: Enough is enoughOnce again GRGB expouses the "two arms and two legs" theory to prove how really neat our Lineman are. Fact is we have less highly recruited linemen than any school in this state except for Rice. It ain't about quantity-the issue is quality and we ain't going anywhere unless we SIGNIFICANTLY improve the quality of our linemen. Every team has about 85 scholarship players-every team has about 15-20 Offensive lineman and every team has about 8-12 interior defensive lineman depending on the defense they run. SMU is woefully short on agile, hostile and mobile linemen and posting the roster of linemen is about as pathetic as in comes in trying to prove your point. The only significantly recruited or even highly regarded linemen out of high school on the team are DeLay, Desmond Jones, Darrin Johnson, Kenard Burley, and that's about it. Only Jones and Johnson made any type of Top 100 List that I'm aware of and none were even close to a consensus Top 100. Next time I'd appreciate a big cheer and maybe a handstand instead. Rah! Rah! Rah!

Re: Enough is enoughNo I don't. But, you already have 32 scholarships just on linemen. They are 90-95% Fresh/Soph so it just doesn't make sense to add 5 more when you need more help in other areas.
It's called MARGINAL VALUE, STALLION -...something you don't know anything about. To add 5-6 more linemen with this class - when you really only had 15 to give (you had 3 already in school, and since he was desperate to sign 2 QBs, that would leave 13 total) would be a rediculous waste. Next year, yes, I think it's time to start reloading. Plus, Bennett is happy already with his current crop of linemen that were sitting the bench. But, you go ahead Stallion, keep being the [deleted] that you are, and reading MORE into my comments than is there...keep the Stallion company line that nothing has changed, despite our recruiting being ranked 40 spots higher per year under Bennett than under any prior coach, and also despite the fact that he signed THREE Jucos (plus 2 transfers), go ahead. NOTHING HAS CHANGED, you are right. You may discontinue your association with SMU now, I mean, the loose association that you still have, since you aren't allowed to participate close to the program and are no longer wanted around Mockingbird anymore. BTW, Bonds wasn't highly recruited, but I think he showed he should have been considered. [ 12-19-2003, 12:00 AM: Message edited by: PonyPride ]
Re: Enough is enoughOh gee I made him cry again-wipe the tears from your eyes and try to prove me wrong. Tell me who are the highly recruited linemen I missed? ANSWER:_________. Your comment about Bennett's classes being 40 teams higher than any other recruiting class is yet another example of pure fantasy-disregarding the fact that he is recruiting under an entirely different and substantially easier recruiting Model.

Re: Enough is enoughStallion,
Although most posters understand that most football games are won in the trenches, this recruiting season SMU seems to have attracted more interest from talented skill position players. If SMU isn't a finalist for highly recruited linemen (except McClinton, etc.) then it makes sense to offer remaining scholarships to the best playmakers available in relation to skill position needs.
Re: Enough is enoughLet's see, we averaged in the 90s under Cavan, and in the low 50s so far under Bennett...hmm... 95 - 55 is close to 40pts higher, but then again, I am not a lawyer like you. Here is STALLIONS basic argument strategy...he refutes an argument that you never made...here's the case in point: I never said we had highly recruited linemen unaccounted for by the almighty Stallion...he responds by CHALLENGING me to dispel who these highly recruited linemen are (as though I said there were some), leading the unwitty reader to think that he has 'proven' his point -- that my opinions are hollow, void of facts - which NEVER happened. He has a history of arguing this...it's slash and burn - typical of a shiitake lawyer (who I might add was responsible for our current situation).
Re: Enough is enoughHey Stallion, what about Justin Boren? I think we all can agree that we need additional quality linemen on both sides of the line. One other comment. I am 6'2". I don't believe Grant Edison is 6'1" or Bryan Turner is 6'2".
