Devin Lowery????

Postby JasonB » Tue Jan 13, 2004 2:32 pm

Is this guy really committed? I am thinking more and more that he may be a walk-on. Fans only lists every SMU committment except for his. Makes me question it a bit???

Walk on doesnt make any sense at all. Perhaps its because he's already out of high school and not enrolled anywhere else, so he may not be in the Fans Only database. Or, perhaps he isnt academically qualifiied yet, thats why he didnt go anywhere after he got out of high school.
I could think of half a dozen scenarios more likely than his walking on at SMU.

he wasn't qualified last year-he sat out to qualify-if you want to see more about him he was a member of the DMN Super Team in 2002 and First Team All State. 56 catches for 1,121 yards-receivers rarely have 1,000 yard seasons in high school. I think he looks like a pretty good prospect. The Grand Prairie Local Section of the DMN did a nice story on him on November 29 that explains his situation.

From The Dallas Morning News

Ex-Grand Prairie star headed to SMU

Devin Lowery is looking forward to December.

But it isn't Christmas presents at the end of the month that has the 2003 Grand Prairie graduate eager with anticipation.

It is the matter of getting his football career going again. Lowery will get his chance at the school on top of his list all along, SMU.

Lowery said last week he has been offered a football scholarship to SMU and plans to accept sometime in the next two weeks. He will enroll for the spring semester Jan. 12.

"I'm really excited," Lowery said. "I could do back flips."

In 2002, Lowery caught 56 passes for 1,121 yards and was named first-team all-state by the Associated Press.

He was selected to play in the Coca-Cola High School All-Star game at North Richland Hills and caught a touchdown, the only one for the West in a 17-7 loss.

But only the junior college route was open during the height of recruiting season in the early months of 2003 because Lowery didn't have the required entrance exam test score.

SMU was his first choice from the beginning, Lowery said.

NCAA rules do not allow SMU to comment uni.

Lowery (5-11, 170) did not become a full-time receiver until his senior season. He played in the secondary as a junior. The combination of his speed and ability to adjust to deep balls thrown by quarterback Rhett Bomar made for a lethal combination. The pair hooked up for 11 touchdown passes.

Lowery was a first-team all-district selection and a first-team selection on SportsDay's all-area team in 2002.

Another bit of trivia courtesy of Google...

Devin Lowery played for the West Team in the '03 Coca-Cola Texas High School All-Star Game. On the other side of the field were a few other familiar names – Ryan Wolcott, Zach Hall, Desmond Jones and Bobby Chase.

Seems to me like we could save a bundle in recruiting costs just by hanging out and recruiting at the All Star game every year (just kidding). Pretty impressive that 2 of the top 8 receivers coming out of high school last year will be on the Hilltop this year.

He is a scholarship player, I believe.

And before you get too worked up about what is and isn't listed on the fansOnly sites, remember this also is the site that says SMU has commitments from a RB named DeMyron Martin and an RB named DeMyron Walker. They're not exactly slaves to accuracy, and they're not very up-to-date.

Does anyone know if he has, in fact enrolled? Also, if he was done with HS, does that mean he would have signed in the early signing period with the JUCOs?

That's outstanding! And it could be a real boost. When's the last time SMU had FOUR newcomers who went through spring drills? Especially with a new offense being installed, it's huge to know that this foursome -- Jared Romo, Tony Eckert, Devin Lowery and Bobby Chase -- will have the benefit of going through spring drills.
