Centex 2A quartet 1st-team all-state
By CHAD CONINE Tribune-Herald staff writer
Sometimes statistics don't tell the whole story, but sometimes they sum it up pretty well.

Both cases were true in area representation on the Texas Sports Writers Association's 2A all-state team. Linebackers Jacob Bane of Rogers and Torin Green of Rosebud-Lott posted gaudy tackle totals, while Hico punter Trenton Hunt let the yardage markers do his talking.

McGregor's David Haynes Jr., on the other hand, carved a reputation not by the numbers he produced, but by his impact on the playing field.

All four Central Texas standouts were first-team selections on the TSWA team.

Bane, a junior middle linebacker, made 116 solo stops and 195 total tackles as he helped Rogers reach the state semifinal round of the 2A Division II playoffs. He recorded 24 tackles for losses and caused five fumbles.

Green, a senior, earned all-state honors for the third consecutive season after making 156 tackles in Rosebud-Lott's 9-3 campaign. Hunt, a junior, averaged 43.7 yards per punt with four kicks of longer than 60 yards.

However, voters had to read between the lines a little more in selecting Haynes, a McGregor senior who had two interceptions and broke up 15 passes. "Talking to other coaches, they didn't throw to his side," Bulldogs coach David Haynes said. "That's a lot of the reason some of his stats weren't as high. He was a good lock down type corner. That's probably the position he's going to play in college."

As of Tuesday, Haynes said his son was trying to decide between Arkansas and SMU. The player also received third-team recognition at quarterback (2,051 combined rushing and passing yards, 25 TD's) and punt returner (445 return yards, three TD's).

Bane, the Super Centex Defensive Player of the Year, was an honorable mention selection on the Associated Press's 2A All-State team, which takes into account regular season stats only. The TSWA uses playoff stats in its selection process, indicating that Bane made a huge impact in the most intense part of the season.

"Every time we played someone in the playoffs they made it a point to mention what a force he was to recon with," Rogers coach John Stillwell said.

Stillwell added that Bane's success had a lot to do with the quality personnel around him. Rogers linebacker Andrew Brenek, also a junior, made 175 tackles with 16 for losses and earned honorable mention all-state.

Green functioned as a running back on defense, with Rosebud-Lott defenders picking up blocks and allowing the linebacker to find the ball carrier.

"We ran some defenses where we really protected him," Rosebud-Lott coach Bill Baine said. "We kept people off of him and he runs really well. So if you're not going to get anybody on him, he'll get to the football and make some plays."

Hico junior punter Trenton Hunt earned first-team honors after averaging 43.7 yards per punt with four kicks of longer than 60 yards. He was also an honorable mention selection at linebacker.

Mart offensive lineman Stephen Collins and Rogers guard Justin Kacir were both second team all-state selections.

Collins had 87 pancake blocks and helped the Panthers' offense average 356 yards per game.

Kacir was joined on the second team by kicker Josh Pursche and kick returner Chris Williams of Rogers.

"Justin was a guy on the line that could communicate with everybody," Stillwell said. "Pursche shortened the field for us quite a bit and he made a 46-yarder in the semifinal game to send it into overtime. Chris was real versatile. On special teams he just did a super job. Five to seven times he set us up for scores on his returns. He was pretty fearless about it."

Two of Rosebud-Lott's wide receivers earned all-state recognition. Eric Woodruff (56 catches, 752 yards, nine TD's) was a third team selection and Justin Goolsby (42 catches, 802 yards, 11 TD's) earned honorable mention.

Crawford's J.R. Ewing made third team all-state at defensive line and Pirates dotted the honorable mention list. Crawford's honorable mention selections were Lee Murphy at quarterback, B.J. Christian at kick returner and Andrew Judy at defensive line.
