Top 10: Recruiting

Postby Letterman » Mon Feb 09, 2004 11:29 pm

From the home office, High on the Hilltop, the Top 10 reasons recruits chose to forego offers from other schools in order to sign with SMU:

10. Recruits learned when visiting TCU that membership in the Mountain West Conference means the Frogs will make road trips aboard the Mars Rover

9. SMU was the only school with a fan Texan enough to go by the name "Rodeo"

8. Someone mentioned "that Justin guy" would be performing at halftime of the Super Bowl with Janet Jackson; figured "that Justin guy" was OL Justin Boren

7. Coaches from other schools couldn't catch LaCori Johnson or Jessie Henderson any better than opponents can

6. WR recruits knew that Mike Romo threw for 6,041 yards, the third-highest career total in SMU history; figure that at 6'2' and 210, his son Jerad will be even better

5. Sean Lobo figured the only way to keep his sister's boyfriend -- TCU quarterback Brandon Hassell -- from coming over and eating everything in the fridge was to sign with SMU and start pounding the Frogs into submission

4. Kyle Griffin's trip to Miami (Ohio) didn't include a single trip to South Beach

3. Coach Bennett promised recruits that if they signed with SMU, he'd get his mustache re-done in Devin Lowery-style braids

2. Chase brothers figured that if Irving head coach Jim Bennett and his brothers, Phil and Jerry, were willing to stand in front of recruits on official visits and belt out that "You're my Brother" song that's played at waaaaaayyyy too many parties, then they REALLY must know what they're doing as coaches

And the #1 reason recruits chose to forego offers from other schools in order to sign with SMU:

1. New director of the Texas A&M Yell Leaders: Howard Dean

#10, #6, #5 and #1 are great. It's official - Letterman's back! (Wouldn't give you a 100, but maybe a 85-90 score for this one.)

#2 is more than a little unnerving, by the way.

How about Rodeo already making a Top 10 list?!

#6 is great -- I didn't Mike Romo was old enough to be Jerad's dad!

A Howard Dean reference? You going political on us, Letterman?
I always enjoy your lists.

Funny stuff, but somehow I just can't see the Bennetts sitting around singing together.

Good stuff, Letterman.
I get the impression Howard Dean isn't doing as much yelling now as he was a couple of weeks ago.
