Hall Makes Insiders 2005 Top 100

although its early and certainly there are many players who have not been evaluated SMU commit Chris Hall starts out as the No. 53 recruit in Texas in the Insiders 2005 Hot 100. (he is actually listed as "Mike Hall" but unless he has a 6-5 285 twin brother from Irving I'm pretty sure they meant Chris.) BTW DE Marcus Shavers looks like very well will be a National recruit and is currently listed as the No. 13 player in Texas. He already has offers from SMU, A&M and Arkansas. He continues to report strong interest in SMU among his favorites. It also appears from several reports that the Aggies are going to have a good shot.

How big would it be for SMU's recruiting if Shavers was to join his buddy as an early commitment? I remember a time when Dade County Florida kids wouldn't even give Miami a look, but once some of those locals decided to stay home...well, the rest is history.

I like Bennett's plan to build this program locally. Should make for a more involved group of parents, family & friends (I know...insert your RELTIVE STANG joke here). The simple fact is that SMU needs to cultivate every local fan it can. Getting top local players to stay home will go a long ways towards curing what has been ailing SMU athletics.

I definitely think Bennett has the right formula. Even after the last two seasons, I still think he is a talented coach. But, I think he is realizing how hard it is to implement his plan. It is doable, but I don't know if it can be done as fast as most want....

The right formula for private schools in major markets like the big turnaround programs of USC and Miami has been to capture the flag locally. Both programs have come back from the dead big time. Even NIU's fortunes changed dramatically when they focused their recruiting on NE Illinois.

It is (SMU's) time for "the State of Dallas".

So if we had our pick of players in the Dallas area (include suburbs, but not as far over as FW -- maybe to Arlington and Colleyville), do you think we could WIN Conference USA? I kind of do. There's just a ton of players from Dallas heading to OU, the Florida schools, UT, etc., each year. Lock those down and who knows?

Wow. I don't know. We'd certainly do well, but that's a tall order. I'd think there are too many programs that recruit nationally that we might not be BCS-caliber, but you follow recruiting more closely than I do. Hopefully the coaches can tie down more of the local players. (Plus, that would bring more folks out to Ford Stadium, which would help, too.)

If we did not win the BCS, the winner would be put on probation.

Chris Hall is also the No. 60 player on the first Lone Star Recruiting Texas Top 100 done by Geoff Ketchum of the UT Rivals site.

Has anybody heard anything from Marcus Shavers lately? He used to post regularly on PonyFans. Marcus, if you're out there, please drop us a note to let everyone know how you're doing and how your offseason is going.

Haven't heard a peep. Come on, Marcus, give us an update!

Can someone post the link to the Texas list? I'm not saying post the list itself -- I'm happy to go through their site. But my computer/internet ignorance is rearing its ugly head here. I don't seem to be able to find it.

Thanks
