June still recruitng academic at risk players?

There was some talk amongst the Klemm haters that June would never recruit an academic at risk player again even though he is constantly complains about SMU academic standards. Something that has not stopped the basketball team. Anyway, now I am hearing that we may not sign a player(s) today due to academic issues. That means he recruited players with academic issues. Crazy how things work.

Wait, if he does not sign them then doesn't that mean he is not taking them? Not sure you have identified an inconsistency.

It means we spent time recruiting them. The Klemm haters said that June would not spend time recruiting them.

I thought he did not spend time recruiting anyone supposedly? Now you are saying he was spending time recruiting? Is it possible to only realize late in the process that someone has academic issues, or are they supposed to be identified right from the beginning? I am having trouble keeping up.

I never said that June did not recruit at all (others may have) but I just believe he does not use effective methods. Just my opinion.

Athens OLB Chris Jefferson will not sign with #SMU. He will instead go the JUCO route.

its really hard for any recruiter to know if a kid will qualify 1 1/2 years before they graduate and get an SAT/ACT score. You don't just get a "passing SAT/ACT score" because its tied to GPA on a sliding scale and you don't know GPA until transcript is complete. Its easier to conclude that a school has lower admission standards when they wait to see if a late qualier gets in by August like they did with Frazier and June has done with 15-20 recruits. If the kid doesn't and goes JUCO then you know he probably didn't qualify anywhere else too if he had other offers. I think what is happening is that the 25 man NCAA cap is harder now so a marginal qualifier might cost you a recruit. That might be what happened to Gaines, Jefferson and Jeanyls we'll see. That's a decision a lot of schools make. Risk/Reward analysis. Look for unexplained decommits and then see later if they qualify anywhere else or go JUCO.

Update:

Jeanlys who reportedly SMU is waiting on to score a qualifying SAT score will greyshirt. Of course, with him that could be a sign of waiting for a late qulifier or also waiting on a kid that was recovering from injury. Next year will be his second missed season

several players SMU is not waiting on to be late qualifiers-but I don't think one was very highly recruited. Could be they just found some one better and cut them loose. Can't really tell much unless a recruit has other offers and then qualifies at the other school

Might also have few offers because he was an academic risk to start with.

June has said the last recruiting class was great because the size was there and there were no academic risks. Something to that effect.

I'm sure he meant they were projected qualifiers and they wouldn't have to wait until August to find out if they qualified-that doesn't mean there weren't academic risks A kid with a sub 900 SAT at SMU is always going to be an academic risk-that's 400 below average

Last class did have academic risks (Freddie Johnson and Brian Taylor). The 25 limit makes it harder to sign them but they recruited them enough to get a commitment from them. And the last class was not great. Just because you have size does not mean you can play.

Signing Day Press conference is up on our YouTube page (sorry, it took forever to load). Recruiting Roundup, which includes the video, should be up and working momentarily.

At the media press conference, Jones stated (paraphrase) that this class is a step up athletically as well as in the classroom.

Does that mean we are no longer recruiting "at risk" kids? I don't think you can draw that conclusion. But it does sound like perhaps there aren't any in this class, and I guess all things being equal, you'd rather not have the additional headaches of trying to keep kids eligible.

Mexmustang said that Jeanlys was an academic risk and he was recruited in this class. Others have indicated that Ryheem Moore is as well. So this is really no different than any other class imo. As far as the press conference is concern what is he suppose to say? No coach ever says that their class is less athletic than previous classes. Seriously, people know the signing day rhetoric. Well, I guess I see now that some don't but whatever.
