To summarize, June says he can't recruit elite football players to SMU so he is going to recruit athletes he hope will be able to play football after a few years.

That leaves open the question of why he doesn't try to sell SMU and Dallas to elite football players. Post-college and post-NFl opportunities are much brighter in Dallas than Knoxville or Tuscaloosa (or Waco or Lubbock).

sigh……only 5 months to go before we can get back to real coach who actually trys to play to win instead of appear like he is a mad scientist wonk.

In somewhat related news...Cedar Hill DB Darrell Miller, who had interest in SMU but didn't even know he'd been offered by the staff, committed to Tennessee today.

lol he doesn't even have the gall to say we "can't compete." He says we "probably" can't compete, betraying the fact that he doesn't even try.

If only we had bigger meeting rooms, damn it!

If he thinks we can't compete now, just wait until the P5 make their own rules and provide athlete benefits that we can't/won't match...

When the NCAA lets things get that out of hand I suggest it is time for SMU to reevaluate the current rules on recruiting. Under the right circumstances SMU can recruit with anybody...at least we could in days gone by. :)

P5s may be opening a can or worms that they do not what to open. With little to fear regarding recruiting there are a number of smaller schools that could become major players if they so wished. The questions would become who wants to play with the big boys and how bad?

Does anybody believe that tiki could recruit those types of athletes any better than his 'lip service' style of recruiting of fball players?

To June's credit, the weather around Cape Town is not that dissimilar from Hawaii, and he can hit a Gary Player or Ernie Els designed course while he is there.

And of course it will all be on SMU's nickle.

sidebar: exactly how positive are we that SMU will move on from June Jones when his contract is up after this season? and even if he opts to retire, how can we be so sure that Gerald Turner won't dictate that someone else be hired who is a disinterested seat-warmer who will shoot for a .500 football program? people point to the larry brown hiring as a sign that SMU will hire someone who wants to aggressively improve the football program, but Turner may view basketball and football as wholly different endeavors, with one less risky to his legacy than the other. and even if he was willing to make a splash with the next football coach, have the mudiay and frazier/DISD ordeals frightened him off of that?

i just want to have realistic expectations so we aren't crushed next spring when SMU announces that it's hiring Yale's former tight ends coach to replace june.
