Rice Class this year

noticed we have several of their commits looking hard at us - and the first Morris commit is a former rice commit. How did they get that many three stars committed in the first place? Shows you what some effort in this state can bring you. We are not going to be on their christmas list if we pull three or four of their best recruits over (not that i care).

If they can pull together a decent class with their academic restrictions, we should have no excuses.

Poaching some of their top talent should be a great start to our class

According to Rice's Rivals page, here's the Owls' current class:

Committed/Not Yet Signed
Name Pos Ht/Wt Stars Rank
Zach Abercrumbia DT 6-3/255 40
Sam Awolope OL 6-5/250 46
Christian Bertrand DB 5-11/180 NR
Justin Bickham DB 6-1/185 NR
Josh Cummings DB 5-11/175 NR
Brandon Douglas DB 6-0/175 NR
Isaiah Edwards OL 6-7/365 NR
Nahshon Ellerbe RB 5-9/187 NR
Emmanuel Esukpa RB 6-0/210 NR
John Tyler Granato QB 6-3/209 NR
Crockett Mokry OL 6-4/309 NR
Castin Neumeyer OL 6-5/265 NR
Blain Padgett DE 6-5/238 NR
Houston Robert DB 5-11/175 NR
Jackson Tyner ATH 6-5/225 NR

The first two have some serious offers, so let's swipe them. I'll take Edwards, too, just because you can't have too many big guys up front.
But I really don't know anything about any of these guys.

I was going off ESPN - they had about 10 three stars, albeit those might not be meaningful.

ESPN has pretty much everyone listed as a 3*. They're not really a good recruiting service. Sort of everyone gets a trophy syndrome, but with stars. Jason B uses ESPN to try and justify June's recruiting all the time.

Rice lost another one-a great prospect OLM Sam Awolope who flipped to TCU. 16 reported offers including 10 BCS offers. Rated No. 54 in Texas. We need to go get Abercrumbia from Skyline who has 14 offers including national academics-so he'll qualify

Once you put the crack pipe down, you might recall that I have been a proponent of looking at all 3 of the recruiting ratings to do comparative analysis. The really good recruits are usually well regarded by all three services. If they are only rated highly by one service, regardless of which one (Rivals hands out 3 stars like candy now as well), that makes them iffy. two stars across the board is diamond in the rough.

When you look at the ESPN rating, a 75 and up is a legit BCS/P-5 level recruit. 74 - 70 are lower P-5, upper G-5, and then under 70 is DIR, or a 2 star on rivals.

Having a lot of players in the lower 70s like Rice has right now will usually give you a pretty decent team outside of the P-5.

No Rivals has gone back to being the most selective service

a couple of years ago they got up to about 260 3+ stars
Last year-about 200
This year as of a few days ago about 160 which is where they used to be before 2008

Rivals usually does add some 3+ stars after high school season ends

That's true, forgot they were more selective starting last season. We were both expecting them to amp the number of 3 stars last year at this time and it didn't happen.

Anyway, the point is that I don't favor ESPN, I just look across all three of the services. One thing that IS nice about ESPN, is their scout analysis where they actually break the player down into strengths and weaknesses. It tells you a lot more about a player than just a number and a rating (at least from that one person's perspective).

On the downside of ESPN, they don't even rate either of the Scott brothers.
