Hicks vs. Virgil

Postby Terry Webster » Fri Dec 19, 2014 6:43 pm

For all you recruiting wonks, which one of these two is better? Are we better off with Hicks as opposed to Virgil?

They are both good and either one would have done well at SMU. Obviously SMU fans will say Hicks and Fresno fans will say Virgil. Bottom line is we got a high caliber QB.

Virgil is the more mobile QB and Hicks is a much better passer. Morris though can modify his offense-G.J. Kinne who was no speedster had an outstanding year with Morris as OC at Tulsa. Virgil was slightly higher rated. But both were more highly recruited than any high school QB June Jones brought in. Extra recruiting points because he can play spring ball and it was a desperate position of need.

Based on this logic Hicks is clearly the superior QB, and it isn't even close!

No, no, no, what about that 4 Star QB we lost after June fired? (I believe June also brain mapped him)

Had to be a record for the most under recruited 4 star in the history of Rivals, or any service for that matter. #11 QB in country whose only offer was SMU, until UC Davis came in and swept him away. 8)

Answer is Virgil. But Hicks will be really good too so it is ok.

The true and correct answer is that we won't know until at least a couple of seasons have passed, then we can start the comparisons.

Hopefully we find out early next season after we beat TCU and Baylor thanks to Hicks throwing some bombs to Proche and Primetime Jr. taking a couple KORs to the house.

I agree. I wanted Virgil (given our O line), but am more than happy with Hicks. Having seen both in live action (this season), I disagree with the "coach's son" link above; Virgil's smoothness makes it appear that his footwork is better; IMO, Hicks is far more sound (albeit not nearly as 'smooth') mechanically.

Hicks has the better arm and ability to read/exploit the D, while Virgil has a serviceable arm and is better in a designed run scheme and/or when protection breaks down. Virtually a toss-up in terms of potential. Excited to see what HCCM can do here!
