A quick primer on signing day for the Ponies. Short article, but consolidates commits/potential recruits.

A little sloppy, IMO.

Per the article; "Most of the commits in this class are holdovers from June Jones and company...."

Breakdown;

Jones-era commits
James Proche Rivals 3* Scout 3* CBS/247 3* (10 other offers, 3 from P5 schools)
Christian Williams Rivals 2* Scout 2* CBS/247 2* (1 other offer - Tulsa)
Mitchell Kaufman Rivals 2* Scout 2* CBS/247 2* (no other D1 offers)
Lamont Johnson Rivals 2* Scout 2* CBS/247 2* (1 other offer - Southern Ill)
Delontae Scott Rivals 2* Scout 2* CBS/247 2* (5 or 6 other offers, 4 or 5 from P5 schools)
Marcus McNeil Rivals 2* Scout 2* CBS/247 3* (no other offers)
Myron Gailliard Rivals 2* Scout 2* CBS/247 2* (Rivals shows additional offer from New Mexico)

Total commits: 7
Average rating: 2.14* (Rivals), 2.14* (Scout), 2.29* (CBS/247)
FBS offers - 17 or 18 including 7 or 8 P5 offers (depending on which service is referenced)

HCCM-era commits
Ben Hicks Rivals 3* Scout 3* CBS/247 3* (5 other offers, 2 from P5 schools)
Hunter Herndon Rivals 2* Scout 3* CBS/247 3* (4 other offers, 1 from P5 school)
Michael Scott Rivals 2* Scout 3* CBS/247 3* (10 other offers, 7 from P5 schools)
Hunter Thedford Rivals 2* Scout 2* CBS/247 3* (2 other offers)
Alex Honey Rivals 2* Scout 3* CBS/247 3* (4 other offers)
Matt McNew Rivals 2* Scout 2* CBS/247 2* (5 other offers)
Keaton Bates Rivals 2* Scout 2* CBS/247 2* (6 other offers)
Rodney Clemons Rivals 2* Scout 2* CBS/247 2* (1 other offer)

Total commits: 8
Average rating: 2.125 (Rivals), 2.5 (Scout), 2.625 (CBS/247)
FBS offers - 37 including 10 from P5 schools

**I did not include Crockett in the tabulations, as he has not yet fulfilled the NCAA's transfer requirement

"...and like in years past, SMU ranks near the bottom of the conference."

Actually, as of this moment, we're 7th in conference (88th overall) according to CBS/247, 8th in conference (90th overall) according to Rivals, and 5th in conference (88th overall) according to Scout. Not quite at the bottom; more like fair-to-middling. I think we'll pick up two or three more 3* studs in the next week or so.

Thank you. I was curious so I calculated the average distance from SMU to each of the schools for the pre Morris and Morris recruits. I was surprised that the pre Morris recruits averaged 51 miles and the Morris recruits averaged 87 miles. It is not important, but I thought it was interesting in light of the recurring theme of 1/4 tank of gas.

Per EJ, Hicks got a deep rub in the playoffs.

Even though it's mostly 2*'s the key with Morris recruits is that, with the exception of Clemons, all his recruits have more than 1 other offer. Only two of the Jones holdovers can say that.

Great work so far for only having about 3 weeks of live recruiting

this 1st year is all about whether this staff does a better job with their DITR recruiting than what JJ and his staff did. Nobody is expecting Morris & Co to come in and flip a bunch of guys who have committed to P5 programs, especially coming off a 1 win season. Have to hope Morris' contacts in the coaching community are strong enough to really mine some quality guys who have been overlooked, but more importantly is for the team to have an immediate and noticeable improvement on the field next year to make the job of selling SMU easier.

Clemons has a New Mexico offer and would have gotten an Maryland offer if he had gone on his scheduled 1/23 visit. I'm kind of glad we convinced him not to. I think he's one of our better looking prospects who had a great Senior year. I'm definitely on board with Clemons. First Team All Greater Houston is a great honor

I agree. He's the kind of DITR (if you even want to call him that) that you want.

for what its worth, Mitchell Kaufman has had offers from Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth and Penn. He is smart enough but not a boy genius by any means, i think it's just that the Ivy actually makes an effort to recruit HP while most P5s don't sniff HP. Harvard has 4, three stars committed right now so they do a decent job recruiting nationally. Several CUSA and MWC schools have inquired through HP coaches and the coaches have basically told them that Mitchell would really not be interested in their schools. Probably too honest of an approach if you care about collecting offers but that’s the way the HP coaches roll. If you know or have been around Randy Allen, you would not be surprised, he shoots straight, very straight. Coach Morris was at our house recently. Great great guy, I am happy to have Mitchell play for him. Same with Coach McDaniel, fabulous guy. Hopefully Mitchell can make a big contribution on and off the field for them.

Good for him. I had an Ivy offer and told my coach schools in which I was not interested so that does lower number of offers. And I played with Randy Allen and know he is a straight shooter. Good luck to Michael.
