Ron Meyer's strategy is a winning formula: "wall off DFW, dominate Houston (don't know how but dominate Houston), and go find DITRs out in east texas". Then cherry pick LA and OK if you can every once and a while. That alone gets you into a "P5 bowl" and wins the AAC and gets a P5 conference invite most likely (need about 3-4 classes).
Of course, he had some "advantages" this staff might not have (and TCU and BU were weak at the time - not at the apex of the history of their programs like they are right now) but that's the general idea . . .

This is only because JJ laid the groundwork. Sorry, couldn't resist.

In a way you're right, JJ showed SMU how Not to recruit.

And we know those "additional efforts that aided in emphasizing good decision making skills in potential recruits" are universal. Interesting quote today attributed to Urban Meyer regarding OSU. Says when he took over their program, they had a bunch of cowboys who recruited however they wanted to get the guys in. Thought it interesting that he said it that way...since it reinforces the belief many had about OSU under the prior AD and regime that compliance was only a suggestion and they did what they wanted, especially with basketball and football.

What an amazing change in such a short time. Recreating and refreshing the Texas pipeline immediately.

Even more amazing that only two didn't have any other offers (both June holdovers), especially since 55% of the guys on the roster for next year (not counting this class) didn't have a single other offer.

Even better are the new connections made and reestablished with Texas High Schools.
Any chance they add on a few JUCOs?

The only good ones left are going to be the kids who were non-qualifiers out of high school (and therefore have to graduate from JUCO) and were not taken because there was concern that they may not make it. I'm sure there are 10-15 that schools will monitor their academic progress to see if they actually make it in May. The new 2.5 GPA and core requirements for JUCOs make for a bigger obstacle now
