Johnson was District MVP ...in Basketball too. 2 Time District MVP in Football, 1 Time District MVP in Basketball and 2 Time all-District in Basketball and Regional Qualifier in 3 Track events
Pretty rare Double Double
Just to clarify-he's a pretty good student too even though he was a late qualifier-with close to a 90 GPA-just needed the right ACT
Class 3-A: Kevin Johnson, Sr., Running Back/Free Safety, Waskom:
Kevin Johnson threw one pass in 2014. On a key fourth and 12 play in a tight battle with Sonora, Kevin completed that pass for 34 yards, extending a key drive and leading the Wildcats to a 25-21 squeaker in the state semi-finals. A week later, Waskom dominated Newton 41-22 for the 3-A, Division II title, the school’s first. For the season, Kevin rushed 134 times for 1,995 yards (just shy of 15 yards per carry) and 21 touchdowns. He also caught five passes for 66 yards with two TDs and returned three kickoffs for touchdowns. He’s equally at home on defense. From his spot at free safety, he was in on 167 tackles, defensed three passes, forced two fumbles, and even scored a defensive TD. He has been an all-state safety each of the last three years.
An all-around athlete, he was all-district in basketball last year when he was also a regional qualifier in the long jump, triple jump, and sprint relay. No slouch in the classroom, he sports an 88.9 percent academic average. He’s active in the First Baptist Church, the FCA and reads to elementary school youngsters every Friday.
“Kevin is an unbelievable kid and a great athlete. He plays—and plays hard—on every play, at running back, defensive back, and kick returner,†says Waskom Coach Whitney Keeling. “He’s on the field for 140-150 snaps per game. And he’s a leader on both sides of the ball. He’s one of those kids you can totally count on—never late, never absent, always working at a high level. His mom gets the credit for raising him right. He and his running mate Junebug Johnson are cousins who’ve grown up in the same household since their first birthdays. There are no brothers closer than the two of them. Putting it simply, he’s the best player I’ve ever coached, and that encompasses a lot of players. I can’t think of anyone I’d trade for Kevin.â€
