Jamal Charles Lists SMU...

....among a cast of thousands of schools he has interest in although SMU is not in his top 6. Jamal is the brother of Shanderrick. He already has at least 10 offers from a Who's Who list of top programs. Charles is expected to be among the top RBs in the nation in next years class. He also says he likes to compare himself to Eric Dickerson.

I have always compared myself to Robert Redford (looks not politics). Hopefully Jamal will be closer to his beliefs than I.

I wonder where RB ranks on the list of priorities for the 2005 signing class. We'll lose Foy Munlin after the 2004 season, but we'll be welcoming back Richuel Massey, Cedric Dorsey, DeMyron Martin, Andrew McKinney and Jessie Henderson .... and I think I'm forgetting someone. Perhaps the priorities should lie elsewhere?

Or is this guy so talented that he just can't be passed up?

would you pass on a guy like Eric Dickerson, Reggie Dupard, Billy Sims or Earl Campbell-who the hell cares who you've got at a position if you can add one of the best in the nation. Some of you need to stop worrying about the number of live bodies we have at a position and concentrate on attracting the most QUALITY possible. The goal of championship teams is to be 4 deep with the best possible quality possible. If you had 10 RBs you'd still take a Charles and move the others-and I guarantee you Bennett and 100% of all college coaches would agree if you are talking about a Gold Chip like Charles.

It is not quite the same as the Pros where you can fill positions by trades and free agents. You do have to recruit towards needs. But you never pass up on a 5 star or top 10 or whatever you call a national top recruit. Just the attention given by getting one is worth the signing. Imagine the top rated lineman you would have follow someone like Charles to SMU. Those big guys know that they shine when their running back rolls up the yards. I am too old to remember and was not on the inside, but I would imagine we signed some great lineman during the Dickerson/James/Dupard era simply because the knew for whom they would be blocking.

SMU had it down during the Dickerson, James, Dupard era.

SMU played one O-line in the first and third quarter and another one in the second and fourth.

Big Men - Get it.

Some people deserve to get hit over the head with a 2x4. One of the top RB recruits in the country lists SMU and we may have the chance to get him because his brother went to SMU and some people honestly consider not pursuing him because we have recruited a lot of RBs? You people are nuts.

A winning season this year sure would help our chances. I honestly think that Bennett is good enough of a recruiter to bring in a couple 4 or 5 star guys every year once we start winning. We just have to start first.

A couple of 4 or 5 star guys each year??? Have we even gotten one 4 or 5 star recruit since we received the death penalty....outside of the kid from SOC who never made it on the field?

I never said DON'T take him. I asked if he was too good to pass up. I know nothing about the guy, other than the fact that his brother played for SMU, so I asked.

LET'S JUST GET A HUGE OLINE AND BE DONE WITH IT (heh heh heh :))

As far as taking a great RB when you have one...you take the best players no matter what...that's why we took all of hte lesser recruited but all-around athletes in 2003 and 2004 (the 5'11" 190lbs QB/RB/WR/DB/Basketball studs in HS) rather than a 'position' that we had less depth at.

They are athletes that 'might' be able to fill positions - and have speed.

Rivals lists several schools for him (Arkansas, Houston, Iowa, LSU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M), but not SMU. I have no idea how up-to-date that list is, of course, but I always feel better when the Ponies are mentioned.

Hopefully he'll be like Chris Hall and follow his brother to SMU.

Which means he'll be up for induction in the College Football Hall of Fame one day!
