There seems to be a strong sentiment on this board for SMU to sign more linemen, both offensive linemen and defensive linemen. Makes sense to me, since I'm a firm believer in the notion that games are won and lost "in the trenches" and therefore, you can't have too many.
Does SMU have a full class of scholarships to give in February?
Can anyone offer a breakdown of how many players at different positions the team needs?

I don't know how many scholarships we'll have in February. But here's what I'd like to see:
2-3 cornerbacks
2-3 safeties
1-2 linebackers
3 defensive ends
2-3 defensive tackles
2 wide receivers
1 running back
1 quarterback
1 tight end
The rest of the class should be offensive linemen -- would give us 22 guys, if we sign the higher number at each of the above positions. (If we have more 'ships, spend them on additional linemen.) Get a punter or kicker next year.

I would make a change and get three DT's and 2 DE's ( Maybe 3 ) And Yes we need to fill the class with O-Line.
I bet it will happen!

MINIMUM 4 OLs and MINIMUM 5 DLs.
Fill in the rest around them.
How many outgoing seniors are there on the 2004 roster?

there's no current roster up on the smumustangs site, but I was thinking the same thing (how many seniors).
Adami and Williams on the DL and Hargis and Neal on the OL are the only seniors that come to mind.
After signing only 1 OL last year, there is no question that big men have to be a priority in next year's class.
I do think we will have a pretty good line by the time we start CUSA play and the 2001/2002 classes are ready to contribute.

According to the roster handed out at the spring game, here are the scholarship seniors on the 2004 roster:
Rico Harris
Matt Rushbrook
Allan Adami
Derron Brown
Chris Godfrey
Foy Munlin
Wesley Medlock
D.D. Lee
Derek Swofford
Eric Neal
Townsend Hargis
Trey Griffin
Melvin Williams
Clay Glockzin
Can that be right? Only 14?
Also gone: Ricky Joe Meeks
So that means 15, plus any scholarships we had this year that didn't get used (two or three) - 18. Natural attrition brings that number to 21 or 22.
OK, I feel better about it now.

That still seems like a small senior class. I look forward to the days when we can sign a full class of 25.

I can't wait for a full class of 25 after a better season. If we can get some wins and show players that we are in fact turning the corner... Good things will come. WE NEED TO WIN.

You know guys, we probably have enough linemen. Anyone can sign linemen. We don't have the ones who are good enough. Quality linemen are just as sought after as running backs. There are just a heck of a lot more to choose from in the running back dept. Give me an average running back behind a good O-line anyday vs the other way around.

I think 1 on offense and 3-4 on defense. The majority are soph/rs-fr
