Mustangs Host Texas Southern Thursday In First Round Of WNIT
SMU is making fifth postseason appearance in last seven years

March 17, 2014

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU will host a WNIT game for the first time in program history Thursday, hosting Texas Southern in Moody Coliseum. Game time is yet to be announced. For the Mustangs, it is the sixth appearance in the postseason tournament, and the fourth in the last six seasons. Overall, head coach Rhonda Rompola has guided the Mustangs to 13 postseason tournaments, including five in the last seven years.

General admission tickets are available for $7, $5 for students, and can be purchased by calling 214-SMU-GAME (214-768-4263), or by visiting SMUMustangs.com. Parking for the event is free in Moody Garage, located directly north of Moody Coliseum.

The Mustangs finished in the regular season 17-13 overall record in the inaugural season of the American Athletic Conference. Keena Mays led the conference in both points, averaging 20.8 points per game, and 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 38.8 percent from behind the arc.

The senior was one of three Mustangs to earn all-conference honors, being named to the first team. Akil Simpson was a second-team selection, averaging 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds to rank in the top 10 in the conference in both categories. Kiara Perry was also named to the All-Freshman team.

The Lady Tigers are 20-12 on the season after falling to Prairie View A&M in the SWAC championship game. Jazzmin Parker led the team with 19.1 points per game, and was named SWAC Player of the Year. Texas Southern shoots 43.6 percent from the field, while holding opponents to 39.0 percent.

The winner advances to play either Minnesota or Green Bay in the second round. Minnesota host Green Bay Wednesday.
