SMU Band QuestionWhy doesn't SMU have the big tuba's that other bands have?
Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: SMU Band QuestionWe are anti sousaphone. Yes, its discrimination.
Re: SMU Band Question
The Temple Fight song sounded like a long fart due to theirr tubas. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: SMU Band Question
Those instruments you refer to the other schools having are not tubas -- they are sousaphones. The were designed originally by John Phillps Sousa for marching band. The Mustang Band uses actual Tubas. Reason is once again tradition - it goes with our jazz tradition. The current instrument is a "shotgun" tuba designed to project the sound forward. It sounds better and is louder.
Re: SMU Band Question
Gotta disagree. Sousaphones are louder all day every day.
Re: SMU Band QuestionContra tubas produce a better sound. DCI ("professional" marching bands) use them.

Re: SMU Band Questionthe tubas we use are contrabass bugles...the same ones drum corps use. while the sousaphones may be a tad louder, the contras sound WAY better. Sousaphones may be able to project a little more, but i'll take quality tuba over loud, annoying fart-like tuba. and let's be real, the contra tubas are still plenty loud.

Re: SMU Band Questioni can't believe we are playing for the AAC tourny championship tomorrow and we are talking about sousaphones.
Re: SMU Band QuestionCould be playing the contra skin-flute for all I care...just win tomorrow and maintain this momentum into the tournament.
Re: SMU Band QuestionBand sounded good in tv today
Re: SMU Band QuestionI'm just glad that June Jones, Phil Bennett, and Mike Cavan are gone. Sorry that we let Tom Rossley go.
