Mustangs ousted from American Athletic Conference Championship

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (SMU/The American) – The SMU women’s basketball team’s run in the American Athletic Conference Championship came to an end Saturday night as the Mustangs were ousted by No. 2 seed and 20th-ranked USF, 73-60, in the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Trailing by as many as 18 points, SMU (13-18) battled back to within eight, 59-51, with 4:41 left in the game, and had a chance to cut the lead to six. A pair of missed layups by the Mustangs allowed the Bulls (22-8) to end the 9-0 run and stretch the lead back to double figures, 61-51, with 3:21 remaining en route to the win.

Senior Gabrielle Wilkins finished with 11 points, while Morgan Bolton led the Mustangs with a career-high 15 points. Stephanie Collins scored 14 points and recorded two blocks, extending her SMU single-season record to 73. Freshman Dai’ja Thomas added 11 points. All four players reached double figures in scoring in both of the tournament games.

Courtney Williams, who led the conference in scoring during the regular-season, finished with 29 points for USF, but was limited to just five points in the second half. SMU outshot the Bulls, 40.4 percent (23-of-57) to 37.5 percent (27-of-72), but the Mustangs went just 2-of-10 from 3-point range, while USF made six field goals behind the arc, four by Williams.
