SMU Cruises Past Texas Southern, 61-36

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball team beat Texas Southern, 61-36, Monday evening, led by Alicia Froling's 12 points and six rebounds, both team highs. With the 25-point win, the largest margin of victory since SMU defeated Florida A&M 77-46 at home on Nov. 28, 2014, SMU improves 8-4 overall. The Mustangs are now 5-0 at Moody Coliseum for the first time since the 2013-14 season, when SMU advanced to play in the WNIT. Texas Southern falls to 5-5 on the season and 1-6 all-time at SMU.

The Mustangs shot 7-for-15 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the arc in the first quarter, going on a 9-0 run to lead the Lady Tigers by eight, 11-3, at the 4:38 mark. Alicia Froling led the offensive charge, scoring six of SMU's 18 points in the first period. With Texas Southern battling back, Devri Owens nailed a three-pointer from the wing at the buzzer to give SMU a nine-point advantage, 18-9, at the end of the period.

Kiara Perry scored seven points in the first four minutes of the third period as SMU extended its lead to 21, 38-17. SMU continued to increase its advantage, taking a 25-point lead late in the fourth quarter. Amaura Brandt made a 3-pointer with 52 seconds remaining, giving the Mustangs their largest lead of the game. The points by Brandt were the last of the game by either team as the SMU defense held Texas Southern scoreless for the final minute and 20 seconds of the game, and allowed only three field goals in the entire fourth quarter.

The Mustangs' defense held Texas Southern to a 28.9 shooting percentage for the game, 13-for-45, and limited the Lady Tigers to just eight free-throw attempts for the evening. The Mustangs shot 41.2 percent from the field, 21-of-51. SMU went 5-for-11 from behind the arc (45.5 percent), matching its season high for 3-pointers in a game.

With 12 points, Froling reached double-figures for the 10th time this season, playing 19 minutes in the game. Perry added 11 points, reaching double figures for the fifth time and second in the last three games, and grabbed six rebounds, while McKenzie Adams tallied nine points, making five of six attempts from the free-throw line.

The Mustangs wrap up the non-conference schedule Wednesday in Moody Coliseum against Seattle University at 1 p.m.
