I just read the column he wrote for the Daily Campus that's linked up on the home page. Terrific column. I recommend it to everyone.

Didn't he play for SMU? Is he in grad school?

He says SMU fans were too critical of Hop. I would agree Hop never bitched about his teammates, SMU, or the coaches in the media which is classy.

I would disagree with some of his comments though.

Trent did play for SMU. He was a walk-on guard for either one season or two. I believe he's now a senior.

I agree 100% with every statement in this article EXCEPT BHOP was not the most highly touted player ever to come to SMU. Ira Terrell was-and perhaps others as well. And BTW Terrell never took his team to the NCAAs either.

Good column but like others I do disagree with a few things. Hopkins should be blamed for the way he played in some games. Often in big games he failed to produce at all. I agree Tubbs deserves more criticism than Hopkins but regardless Hopkins' career at SMU should not be considered successful. While Trent mentions Hopkins' game winner at Purdue or his crossover against UTEP or dunking over people over a foot taller than him, he forgets to mention all of the games vs ranked teams where Brian Hopkins disappeared. We saw it over and over.

The biggest point I must agree with is Hop's attitude. In this day and age of the primidona athlete players make excuses for anything and everything. They defend themselves without any humility to the point of embarrassing their program.

I have never heard BHop mention how he could have gone to far greater programs. I have never heard him justify a poor performance by blaming his coaching/supporting cast/fanbase. I have not even heard him make a big deal out of his numerous injuries. Even to this day he has not publicly second guessed his choice to come to SMU. That is being a very humble man. And for all the other faults we might be able to find about his tenure at SMU, I respect Bryan for the way he has always conducted himself.

Regarding IT, back then there were only 32 teams in the NCAA tournament if that. The only way you got in was to win the conference. Had there been 64 teams like now we probably would have gone for three of his four years (one year he couldn't play because he was ineligible). For some reason we couldn't beat Texas Tech the first two years and the last year, Arkansas won the first SWC tournament to get the bid (this was when Moncreif and company were freshmen) after we won the regular season.

Agreed -- he has never called anyone out when he has a bad game (such as when a team ran a defense designed solely to stop him), and he has always carried the SMU banner with class. I'd take a team full of guys like Bryan Hopkins any day .... and I'd win a lot of games.

Yes - he never complained about his team nor coaches, but why would he? What is all the hype about his crossover against UTEP? Rivera ran circles around him.

as far as big recruits i would have to go w/ Koncak and had Jim Krebs grown up in this day and age he would be a bigger recruit than bhop also.. remember krebs was a first team all american and koncak was atleast a 1st team swc and a 1st round draft pick..

i don't want to hear that sasser was a 1st rounder also.. b/c we all know the 1st in the nba draft is basically a joke now.. draft 75% of the time on potential .. hints the euro's and hs players..

Jon Koncak was no where near the highly heralded recruit that Ira Terrell was-although he had a great high school career and was All-State in Missouri . He was thought of as a high-to solid recruit but I don't believe he was considered one of the Top 100 recruits in the country-he was only about 6-9 or 6-10 when he was being recruited. His development was aided by the fact he grew several inches after high school and SMU was so bad that Bliss was able to "invest" in a starting role for Koncak as a true freshman.
