Has turned the TAM program around in 2 years. Tubbs has SMU going in the other direction. It is all about coaching. Gillipsie can, Tubbs can't!

Done a good job. 2 yrs ago they were zero wins in conference I think. He has them going in the right direction... They were non-existent for a long time. He's a nice coach - probably will get snatched up by a better bball school soon. They will lose the 1st round.

Nice conference - check
Athletic Friendly majors - check
Ability to take Juco's - check
Fan appreciation/boosters - check
Good recruiter - check
Good tradition - check
Facilities - no idea, havent' been to A&M for bball

well let's take a look how they did it. Acie Law-All State led Kimball to 5A Championship where they lost on mid court last senond shot. Named All DFW as both Junior and Senior. Joseph Jones-rated No. 86 in the country HoopScoop and No. 12 in Texas. Led his Team to State Championship and named Tournament MVP. Josh Carter rated No. 17 in the State of Texas named All DFW Metroplex. The Lithihian Center Kaval---- who started and excelled on several championship international Teams including the Global Games and the under 21 World Cup. Came to A&M after a year of Community College where he led the nation in rebounding with 10 per game and added 18 points per game in his FRESHMAN year. . Pompey rated the No. 64 Player in the Country by Prep Star-was a non-qualifier and came to A&M after a year of Prep School. Smith the JC National Player of the Year and a two time Junior College All-American. White was unrated but was All-DFW Metroplex at the overlooked Dallas Molina where he scored 28 points as a Junior and 24 as a Senior. Texas A&M will only get better as they have about 4 out of the Top 12 players in Texas in this year's senior class but when they really are an elite team it will have a lot more to do with quality recruiting and liberal admission policies than it will have to do with being a "better coach" than Tubbs. Same thing happened at UTEP where basically fielded an All-American JUCO/Division 1A Transfer/non-qualifier program. Once again this is not the Model under which Tubbs is expected to compete. BTW to the poster above who wasn't sure of their facilities-they just built the State of the Art Reed Center so Check Facilities too.

You are right Stallion. Gillespie has recruited well. However, inheriting a cupboeard that was far from bare (i.e. Antoine Wright.- NBA and Acie Law) along with the others you mention got him off to a strong start.

Our own JT was not as fortunate. But, rest assured, Coach Tubbs can recruit...as can Gillespie.

I saw the Reed arena

Postby Sam I Am » Mon Mar 13, 2006 10:39 am

The Reed area is plush. As for "liberal" admisison standards, you may not have noticed lately, but you don't enroll in aTm like some community college or school with open admissions. You might be surprised at the SAT scores of the Aggies compared to our local private schools. The Ags BB reputation was lower than the Baylor FB record, but Gillespie turned it around. Futhermore, it was evident that he could coach last year and that certainly helps recruiting. He was hired away from UTEP for a good reason - he can win and aTm can pay. This is Tubbs first HC position. SMU is a break-in job for coaches. Those who succeed will be promoted to better paying schools if they win here. Asi es la vida, hombres.

Who was the last coach in football or basketball to succeed and move on to a better paying school? Outside of Dave Bliss.....there hasn't been one since 1988 that I can think of.

It's a big school, if they want a kid, they find a way to get him admitted.

A&M still has an animal husbandry major (aka Cow humping) and general agriculture. Mating BEVO with Elsie ain't too tough.
