This sounds like a setup...a spoiled kid who didn't play and a grandfather that sought to get him his way by either buying out the coach or getting him fired. The whole thing stinks!

So if Max did something illegal, shouldn't he be banned from SMU like some of the alums who were guilty in the 80's?

I would hope that we are through "eating our young"! This should be handled stricktly by the athletic department and not even involve our internal compliance official, not to mention an external lawfirm. I know McDonald's charges more than 15 cents for a hamburger, but how much can it involve? Now are we saying a grandfather can't buy his grandson lunch?

because all the liberal media wants to do is play the blame game and ignore all the good things that have been done in handling this crisis. Oh yeah, and it was Brownie's fault.

Everybody seems to agree this is minor, and for some reason like to blame Max and Matt Williams.

My question is why the hell did Tubbs take the money in the first place? Blame Williams all you want, but between the two of them, Tubbs is the one who HAD TO have known he was committing an NCAA violation.

Maybe Williams knew it a violation, or maybe he didn't. Maybe once he found out that he committed a violation, he immediately turned himself in. When it comes down to it, Tubbs should've turned the money down. No matter what. Sure, its a tiny violation, but its still a violation. And one that had no benefits whatsoever. He's not new to this game, and the risk vs. reward was off the charts.

Not necessarily. First of all, we don't know that he took money. We know someone has SAID he took money. Secondly, there are circumstances under which a coach can buy a kid a meal. I don't know whether that means his money, or the team's money, or what -- I'm not an NCAAologist. But I have been told by people (who actually research this stuff) that there are times when a coach may purchase a meal for players. It might be something as simple as spending his own money or team (budget) money is OK, because it can be documented, and accepting money from outside is not OK because it can't always be accounted for. Still, this is completely ridiculous -- this meal is so famous it should be moved into the Burger Wars thread.

They reported earlier that Max Williams had turned the program in for investigation because he did not like something that he had seen! The original story did not indicate that he was the one that was the subject of the investigation!

Let's see, Gramps gives Tubbs money to buy players some cheeseburgers, then when said cheeseburgers have been consumed he reports a violation to the NCAA.

DJ, you sum the rumor up pretty well. Absurd, absurd, absurd stuff. I'm not saying we shouldnt be careful and very sensitive to the rules, but we seem to tie ourselves up in knots over stupid, minor crap and let other schools use it against us on the trail.
