You are right. SMU could right the ship and warrant additional coverage. Doesn't look close to happening though.

They write what the citizens of Dallas want to read about. Period.

Unfortunately, the majority of the people living in Dallas have more interest in UT, A&M, OU, Cowboys, etc. than they do SMU.

When Texas won the National Championship, it was bigger news than whatever basketball game SMU was preparing for. Sorry, but it was.

When George Mason made it to the Final Four, it was bigger news than SMU spring practice. Sorry, but it was.

They report what the majority of the people want to read about. How worthless would the DMN be if they only focused on events happening in the county of Dallas? On election day 2008, do you expect them to only cover the local elections, and not acknowledge the presidential election? Or even put that story on page 2? No, I want the biggest news on the front page. Should the DMN cover things like Katrina, 9/11, the Iraq War? Should those stories be pushed to the back page in favor of smaller local stories? What about the business section? Only cover businesses headquartered in Dallas? This argument is ridiculous.

It amazes me that some people on this board think the Morning News "owes" SMU coverage for no better reason than its geographic location. And then it can only be "positive" coverage. I got news for them--they would not like the excess coverage given to SMU sports at this point, it would all be negative if based on performance.

Belo is in the business of selling papers, and not just to mr. pony or McClown, either.

My complaint regarding belo is not so much aimed at sports where we get what we deserve - as much as it pains me to say it. We suck for the most part regarding the high visibility sports and thus pay the price in terms of the amount of coverage. That's life and it's incumbent upon SMU to do something to change the sucking part. Only then do we have [deleted] rights if belo chooses to treat us like yesterday's news.

But.............regarding the coverage of SMU as an entity, belo blows. Latest example, Steve Sucks - excuse me - Blow and that cheap shot piece regarding the Bush Library followed several pages later by some fluff positive piece regarding UTD's housing guru. Please..........
