From Dallasnews.com 4/6/06-
Goree Johnson, a DISD assistant athletic director, said that Tubbs' firing would hurt SMU's relationship with the DISD.
"It's going to set them back 10 years or more with the black community," Johnson said. "I don't feel he got a fair shake. That's not sitting well with young coaches."

while I think Goree might be right on this in regards to young coaches taking notice, I will also point out that the DISD's relationship with SMU is about as productive as [deleted] on a boar hog.
Outside of Hopkins, who came to SMU with his brother also getting a scholarship, name the last BIG SMU hoops star to play on the Hilltop.

DickerJames,
Good call on that. Although I would also remind you that SMU beat out Tech for Jeryl's services when Tech was going on probation as Jason finished up in Lubbock.
I still don't see the DISD opening a pipeline to SMU in football or basketball.
Yes, it will make the 'selling to Dallas' a little tougher, but then again, DISD doesn't cover all of Dallas and it hasn't been the model of decorum in general.

How can Tubbs' firing affect DISD players coming to SMU? Tubbs struck out on DISD players during his head coaching tenure. SMU's sub-standard basketball facilities makes it hard to lure the good players. SMU's lack of 'athlete friendly' majors makes it hard to lure the good players. SMU's unwillingness to accept transfer hours makes it hard to lure the good players. The DISD highschool coaches failed Tubbs during his tenure. Not a damn one of them delivered for him. SMU better hire a 'name' coach or we could be really bad for a long, long time. I hope SMU hires another black coach to shut the people up that want to play the 'race' card. Black, white, brown, yellow...SMU absolutely sucked the last two years. Win or get out! Violate rules and get caught and a losing record gets you fired regardless of what color you are. Take note Bennett. You better perform with your easy schedule next year or your rear is next. The question of the quarter is not who the next coach will be but it is can our new AD raise funding to build some decent basketball facilities. And if he does not deliver with top 25 teams his rear should be fired. Amen.

DISD coaches are totally irrelevant - these players do not care what their coaches say. They are "handled" by AAU coaches - who broker their playing services for gifts and prizes.
This will hurt us not one bit. We need a real coach who can game the system. Look at A&M - he gets it.

Wow, can't imagine what that will be about. The aptly-named Blackistone should simply create a template article for these types of situations and just fill in the blanks with the player or coach's name, the school, and the situation. It would save him a lot of time.
