SMU bought out Bobby Collins for silence, A&M bought out Jackie Sherrill for silence. that's the way things are done in athletics.
That was because SMU and A&M had a lot of dirty laundry to hide at that time. Does SMU have something to hide now?

yes, if SMU has the goods and they are substantiated, then the truth shall be their defense. What they have is nothing but unsubstantiated, biased allegations. Unproven. And they ruined a guys career and slit their own throats over it. Brilliant. If they have substantiated major violations, release them.
Sadly, yes. It would just compound regardless of the outcome.
For all the good Turner has done for this university in the realm of academia, he has let an idiot continue to make us a laughingstock with his hires and decisions in athletics with much spillover to our overall identity. And everyone wonders why the Faculty Senate hammers us???? Now that Copeland has acted for the final time, let's hope Orsini can get us moving forward in a postive manner.
My God man, SMU is being investigated by the NCAA because of Gramps. Surely you are not suggesting we are going to withhold damning evidence from them.
I can't tell you how many times I have been sued in business by people who didn't have a case. Thankfully, I have won every one at great expense. And, at some time during every trial, I have thought, "I am going to lose this thing for no good reason."
Arkansas easily won their case against Nolan Richardson. Ask mrydel how good publicity they got out of it.
SMU doesn't want a situation where JT's attorney can call Copeland, Turner, Orsini, etc to the stand and ask them a series of questions unrelated to the incident. "Mr. Turner, have you ever in your life used the "N-word" in any form or fashion?" And you end up with situations like this, and more bad publicity than you could ever dream of: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/mensbasketball/sec/2004-05-06-broyles-slur_x.htm "Remember Danny - Two wrongs don't make a right but three rights make a left."
They could still get sued over the press release. They just alleged that Tubbs committed rampant NCAA violations and that they were more than the cup of Tide and the Burger money. So, did Tubbs and SMU agree to the statement in advance, probably. That is what the $600,000 purchased was his agreement to be trashed. Otherwise, it would have been "Tubbs has been terminated and we can't discuss a personnel matter".
To DickerJames:
Sorry to take this long to shoot back, but work is work, and this board is, well...not work. ![]() Usually, I try not to be condescending. Sorry about the "big boy" comment. As for your JC retort, it is what it is. I might have not thought twice about giving a kid a cup of detergent either. But then again, if I knew as Tubbs should have that the program is under a microscope, I would have suggested getting a girlfriend to do it for him. ![]() I may be wrong, but I have a difficult time believing that a cup of detergent was the catalyst for this. I just do. Starting with that particular stake in the ground, I can take a hardline and not be inconsistent when I say that right, wrong, or indifferent (not to mention major and minor), Tubbs knew better or he should have known better. To So_Cal Pony: Yeah...you probably would not like me on a jury. And my attitude tends to keep me off of them. ![]() "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]."
