Don't judge SMU yet

I know it's in our nature to provide hot sports opinions, but all the knee-jerking about SMU basketball is enough to wear out an arthroscope.

First, we haven't heard the whole story about Tubbs' dismissal. SMU's administration has done some dumb things over the years, but this is a personnel matter. Do you really think SMU would fire a coach over just hamburgers and laundry detergent? There has to be more to the story.

Second, let's see who SMU hires. Look at the OU hire. No one had even thought about Jeff Capel before he was hired, but everything about him says he is destined to be a great coach. There are lots of young, promising coaches who could turn into the next Billy Gillispie. Or maybe SMU will hire a coach experienced at turning around programs. No matter who SMU hires, if he wins and starts filling up Moody Coliseum, DISD kids will want to play for him.

He makes some rather valid points.

of course he does. He's a bright guy and those arent new thoughts. However, who is he addressing with this? The damage is largely done. Wish he would have convinced his collegue at the DMN of this before they raked us over the coals again last Friday. And if there is significantly more than has been released, it seems to be a well kept secret from insiders and fueling more speculation.

I am prolly naive, but I don't think the DISD is going to hold a huge long grudge. I don't recall seeing the DISD community coming to our games. If they had, then I agree they might hold a long grudge. While I enjoy reading his stories it seems like Blackistone is always b*tching about something, so much, that I can't keep up with his current flavor of the week.

I don't agree with what happened, I wish Tubbs the best. And I think that once the new hire comes aboard, especially if it is Evans, that this will die down a lot and life will go on at the hilltop, but hopefully with a few extra wins here and there.

Sounds kind of like Whitmire has gotten a sniff of the Evans possibility and has an agenda to write positive about the hire. If true that's a good thing both for the BB future and hopefully for future DMN coverage. Just a thought.

As I have said, a lot of this doesn't add up, but there might be plausible explanations out there. But the University hasn't seen fit to make those explanations to put these rumors to bed. Until it does, there will be at least some cloud over this program (again).

A month or so from now I don't think there is going to be a cloud around us, that is if no MAJOR rules were broken.
Right now we are not even important enough to have a cloud.......hate to say it but thats just it.

When you have a losing team and an average of 2,000 base fans coming to your games....you don't get a cloud, maybe a little morning fog but thats all.

I understand that a couple people on this board would like answers (and should be entitled to them) but they will prolly be swept under the rug when the new coach is here. This will be best for SMU and Tubbs, both can move on with their lives, tubbs can enjoy his $600,000 for the next two years which he earned by bringing morris and Fall.

If no major rules were broken then we just fired a coach for no good reason other than we weren't winning enough after just 2 seasons. That is a cloud. If there were violations, then of course his firing was fully justified and believe it our not, that cloud goes away some day.

All that cloud would do would scare away potential coaches, but if Evans is already hired or about to be, that cloud is meaningless and life goes on.

Again I don't think Tubbs should have been fired so soon, but I don't think it is going to have this big downfall on the already struggling program that everyone is claiming it will.......again that is if no major rules were broken.

If the administration at SMU didn't give us the whole story about Jimmy Tubbs' firing, then it's just one more thing they've done without thinking it all the way through. I don't think anyone has a problem with firing Tubbs. In today's era of sports, those who don't win get fired. Quickly.

The problem is the silly reason they gave. If there's more to the story, tell it.
