1985....wonder if Doh remembers this! haha
The Heels dropped a close one against fourth-ranked Southern Methodist the next day in Greensboro, 84-82. Carolina couldn't overcome the absence during the game's final ten minutes of four key players over 6'5". (Curtis Hunter and Joe Wolf had gone to the bench with injuries, while Daugherty and Popson fouled out of the game. ) Peterson was at the line with one second left, with a chance to tie the game by making two free throws. But he missed, and a rebound-putback attempt was unsuccessful, so Carolina lost. Daugherty was held to seven points, while SMU center Jon Koncak poured in 31 during the big intersectional tilt.
Carolina managed to bounce back after the SMU loss, with an 86-76 win over North Carolina State

Different guy, isn't it? Aside from the spelling, Matt Doherty was drafted by the Caveliers in 1984, I thought.

my bad, forgot to paste the rest of the article...
who told reporters after the game that he had received supportive telephone calls from Mitch Kupckak, Matt Doherty, Phil Ford, Mike O'Koren and Michael Jordan, following his missed free throw against SMU --
you're right, he was drafted in 84

It's still a great moment is SMU basketball history. Thanks for the memory.

The one who couldn't hang with Koncak was Brad Daugherty, not Matt Doherty. Brad was drafted first overall by the Cavaliers (in a pick acquired for Roy Hinson, as I recall .... and if I'm right, I need more to do). Foot injuries prevented prevented Daugherty from ever getting anywhere near his potential.

Matt Doherty was also drafte by the Cavs...in the sixth round. There isn't enough talent year to year to go two rounds deap, can you imagine if the nba still had six?

I lot of my glory moments end in losses...like almost beat Tulsa in OT at Moody when they were ranked in the top 10...but instead they hit a 3 at the buzzer to force OT, then in OT Brandon Kurtz dribbled the ball all the way down the court with 6 seconds left and was unguarded and preceded to make a wide open layup, winning the game. I was about to storm the court that day but instead I stood in shock as my team crumbled under the pressure. But what about the few nice shots by Renaldo Bratton? I remember Troy Matthews hit a 35 footer at the buzzer once to win a game. Also, Chad Elsey had a couple of big 3's I think back to back buzzer beaters when he was at SMU.
I miss Troy Matthews.

I was there when Todd Alexander and Kato Armstrong led the Ponies to an upset (at Reunion Arena) of the then-No. 3 Florida Gators, a team that featured freaky-fast PG Andrew Moten, NBA-bound SG Vernon Maxwell and the biggest wearer of a mullet ever: Dwayne Schintzius. It was in 1987, I think -- what an amazing game. I don't think Alexander missed all night, or at least it seemed like he didn't.

So was I. The old Dallas Morning News Classic, for which SMU was the host school. Must have been before McClown's time, DMN giving SMU props like that.

I was there too, and that game ranks up there at the top for me. I remember all of us storming the court after the win. That was our SWC Championship year where we then went on to beat Notre Dame in the 1st round of the NCAAs on St. Patricks Day. Lost in the 2nd round to Duke.
