Nobody's a bigger supporter of Eric Castro than I am. But your analysis of his athleticism and leaping ability ("OTHER-WORLDLY") makes me wonder about your athleticism and leaping ability. Such as .... are you sure you're alive?

Water Pony- Maybe just c is true. I don't think d is becuase I also graduated in 68 and was in Laura's class. Jerry L. came to SMU in our sophomore year, I believe, unless he graduated early he would have been in the class of 69. I don't think he graduated early becuase he was still playing in the fall of 68.
OP didn't remember that the Ponies helmets changed while he was in school so it isn't like disagreeing with me means you are wrong.
If I had just been 2 seconds faster in the 100 yd dash, I could have been an All America. A mere 2 seconds separated OP from greatness.

Nash has a reputation for being a very weak defender. But after spotting you a point at the beginning, you "held him" to 63 unanswered points? That's got to be some kind of a record.
He's even known to be a little free with his shot selection. Did you ever even get the ball back?
Nice story, though - funny as hell.

Too bad the Men's Track & Field Team lost varsity status. As a Non-Revenue Sports Guy (Swimming), it p*sses me off that we can't support student-athletes, who deserve the same college experience we enjoyed.
My 100yd time was much, much slower than yours, e.g. 54.1, but I was doing backstroke at the time.
You are probably right about Jerry. We shared the Letterman Dining Hall with FB and BB and I thought he came in the fall of 1964.

If I had been a swimmer, it would have taken about a 20 seoncd improvement to be AA(:. Swimming was a source of pride at SMU back then. I think we held every SWC record except the 50 free. If we could have kept Daivd Quick out of El Toro's we would have had that one too. His brother, Richard, has done well by swimming, huh? I believe you guys finally lost a dual swim meet while we were in school after about a 10-12 year streek. Do you remember the record? Swimming was the one sport we truly were a dominant team. It seemed we had about 10-15 AA every year. I always respected the swim team even though you guys sometimes woke me while you were out running in the morning..Long live Red Barr.

OP,
Thanks for recalling "Red" Barr. Great coach and a greater gentleman. Despite obvious pressures to cut the team size to increase pool time for National swimmers, he felt anyone who wanted to train and compete would be given the opportunity.
When I graduated in '68, we have won 12 consecutive SWC Championships and had not lost a dual team in over 10 years. The SWC streak lasted until the early '70s, I believe. During my three varsity season we finished 5th, 7th and 5th in the NCAA championships. No swim and diving team in the south or southwest beat us during a 15 year period.
Our women, a team which didn't exist then, are our strong "suit" now, finishing 7th this year and, as I recall, 4th last year or the year before. Unfortunately, this year the men didn't crack the Top 25. (Bring on a new Natatorium)
Thanks for the memories. David Quick was quite a character. A real legend, but not necessarily in the pool. This brother, Richard, '65, former U.S. Olympic Women Swim Coach, just announced his retirement from Stanford as the Women's coach.
Again, sorry we lost Men's Track.

WP- Yes it is a shame about track. It is just one more example of how Copeland has failed as an AD.
Thinking back to when we were in school has made me realize what a special time we were at SMU. The football team won a SWC and in our first year as grads were truly outstanding ending that season with a win over Big 8 tri champ OU, the basketball team made 3 (4?) NCAA appearances with one Sweet 16, the swim team was always Top 10, the track team was fun (remember John R and Billy ? battling over who was the fastest in the SWC with times of 9.2 and 9.3 in the 100?), baseball was even decent with Big Bob Boren throwing hard and telling everyone how good he was along with Amerricas funniest coach Bob Finley, Even the ATO's were still on compus. None of those things are true today. The "kids" who have been to SMU since the DP have noneof those things on the list. I couldn't get my kids to go to SMU BECUASE they wanted an experience similar to mine at SMU. Now expectations are so low that people want to play SHSU. We must take the first step toward righting this ship soon. I believe that is firing Copeland. Next- Could we talk about geting the Taus back on campus?(:

OP:
I was on campus this past weekend, where my son graduated. Very special time for our family. He was part of a small, but competitve group of seniors, who turned the club sport around. They were ranked last year and defeat the Longhorns for the first time in the team's history.
My only problem was he is an SAE. As a FIJI, I remember the ATO's (including David Quick, Terry and Don Booth, I believe) at that time knew how to raise hell.
Yes, in the sixties, the Mustangs were the REAL DEAL!!

In light of the renewed Dallas/Phoenix rivalry and the sudden "I hate Nash" sentiment that seems to be sweeping the area, I just wanted to bump this back up. One of my all-time favorite posts.

Too true. I love this post. I guess Nash's sister didn't end up at SMU.

Nope. Wanted to stay closer to home. If memory serves, she went to some university in western Canada.
