Per Calvin Watkins and the blog
http://sportssay.beloblog.com/
Violations and college basketball
Hung out with SMU men's basketball coach Matt Doherty (right) the other night and we had a good conversation about NCAA violations. Doherty and his staff contend that secondary violations are committed all the time by college programs.
I'll admit most of the rules are dumb. Why can't a coach watch his team practice over the summer? A new coach, like Doherty, needs to know his team.
Anyway, it was good to see Doherty and his staff are open to discussions such as these.

He's right. They happen at every school, every year. It's often nothing more than a certain form not being filed properly, or somesuch. Each school keeps a list of such violations, and reports it. That doesn't mean every program in the country is a renegade organization that doesn't try to follow rules.

Watkins should have asked him what NCAA violations Jummy Tubbs has been accused of, and what the status of that investigation is.

Maybe thats why Watkins said "Anyway, it was good to see Doherty and his staff are open to discussions such as these."

I get the sense that Coach D will talk about anything, and is very conscious of where the line is that would be inappropriate for him to cross .... such as, say, an investigation into incidents that allegedly occurred before he was at SMU. Not happening. As long as the questions relate to him and/or his staff, I get the impression he'll address issues as they arise.

Doesn't that mean he'll have to comment on things that happened before he arrived when the investigation leads to sanctions handed down during his tenure? Sounds like a catch-22.
