Plano guard commits to Texas Tech

05:45 PM CDT on Sunday, September 10, 2006

By TODD WILLS / The Dallas Morning News

Plano senior point guard John Roberson said Sunday that he has orally committed to Texas Tech.

Oral commitments are nonbinding. The early signing period for basketball starts on Nov. 8.

Roberson (5-11, 165) committed to the Red Raiders after a home visit with Texas Tech coach Bobby Knight on Sunday. Roberson was also considering SMU and Kansas State, but cancelled home visits scheduled the next two days with Matt Doherty and Bob Huggins.

Roberson said his fast-developing relationship with coach Knight clinched his decision.

"It sounded right and sounded like the perfect fit," Roberson said. "He's probably one of the best coaches who ever coached."

Roberson is ranked No. 139 on the Rivals.com Rivals 100 national list and 10th in the state. He helped Plano win the 2006 Class 5A state championship in his first year at the school, averaging 17.1 points and 7.2 assists per game

I thought Knight was retiring this year so that his kid could take over as head coach???

I thought we had a good chance at Roberson, we have been able to pickup some pretty good talent so far. Good news is that we have two more Rivals top 150 players left that we are going after, hopefully we can sign at least one of those two! I think we can!

GO PONIES!!!

I know Rivals had us listed on Ronnie Moss out of Crowley and Dwayln Roberts from I THINK Duncanville but don't quote me on that. They were both just inside the top 150, are they no longer considering SMU?

We're out on both. Moss isnt at Crowley anymore, he's going to a prep school.

"Plano point guard John Roberson made his commitment to Texas Tech last Sunday. It's an impressive victory for Bob Knight. Roberson had been leaning toward SMU because of a bond he formed with new coach Matt Doherty. But the power of Knight and the Big 12 won out. Roberson feels like Knight gives him his best chance to make it in professional basketball. "
